iPhone Firmware 2.0.1 Possible Changes

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Speculation, jailbreak

Here are some possible changes for FW 2.0.1. As always, Apple does not publish any change log so this is speculation based on user feedback. Note, it is always my observation that users generally say things feel smoother, faster, etc so I tend to disregard these comments. This was taken from appleinsider.com.

-You can now drag an app icon across multiple pages in one motion, rather than having to drag it, drop it, pick it up again and drag it over to next page, and repeat.
-Contacts are now more responsive.
-After installing 2.0.1, each successive backup is much faster.
-Apple may have changed the calibration of the iPhone’s reception “bars” while connected to a 3G network to reflect a stronger signal than before.
-Keypad loads quicker.
-Screen rotation in Safari appears to be smoother.
-Some apps may ask to be updated after the firmware upgrade.

Let’s hope that even though it’s not on this list that the horrible 2.0 springboard bug is fixed.

Zibri’s rant OMG whats next

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Speculation

So I was catching up on the recent events of the morning and came across Zibri’s latest post. Hoping it would provide me some entertainment, I read it. I noticed something in his post that I believe is untrue and nothing anyone has to worry about so I decided to post it here and explain:

Zibri states in his latest status update:

About the ’soon to be released’ hacks,
think about the playstation or online games;
you can crack them, but you won’t be able
to play online with legit buyers.

Now think: what is an offline iPhone?
A paperweight.
That’s what you’re gonna have
if (WHEN) apple decides to push a button.
And this time they will.

To this, I want to speak. There is no way Apple can “push one button” and turn your phone into a brick. They cannot kick you offline either.  Shame on Zibri for trying to generate some panic amongst those that are not so technically inclined. This data is false please disregard it. It is impossible for Apple to kick you offline for any reason. They do not control the networks! So, please no one worry about this shinanigens.

The worst thing Apple can do is kick you off Appstore. And, to this, I say it is ridiculous. Apple is making a a fortune off you from Appstore and would never do something like this. Estimates say 30% of folks jailbreak their phone. They would never turn off 30% of potential sales. They haven’t kicked anyone off iTunes store for jailbreaking.

Anyways, I will be looking forward to the upcoming 2.0 jailbreak. You should be too.

Bandwidth Spike Since 7/11

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Repository, Speculation

So the appstore has not impacted installer much. In fact, since the 11th the bandwidth for the repository has almost doubled. One of my hostings even closed me down today. Speculation could be that many folks are updating to 2.0 then having to downgrade and reinstall all their apps.

2.0 Update

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Speculation, Unlock

2.0 can be manually downloaded and installed. But do not do it! I tried it on my test phone and it seems to be permanently updated. You will need to wait for dev team and pwn 2.0 as a straight upgrade may be a one-way street. Understand that there is a difference between pwning 2.0 and updating to 2.0. Your pwning would start in 1.1.4.

Using common download procedures, DFU mode results in error 1600 and restore mode in error 20. No downgrade occuring.

Update: I have managed to downgrade successfully thanks to Geeb and Crumpx. I have added a guide to do the downgrade in the guides section.

2.0 Warning - do not upgrade!

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Speculation

So it is very likely that FW 2.0 is released today or tomorrow by Apple. My warning to you:

DO NOT UPGRADE!

At this point, you can expect 2.0 to be locked and jailed. This means you will only be able to use contract carriers such as AT&T. You will not be able to unlock. The upgrade process will likely be a one-way trip for now also. This means if you “accidentally” upgrade, you will not be able to go back (for now).

Jailbreak: 2.0 may not be jailbroken anytime soon. But even if it is, you will still stand to lose a lot (read further). For now, let’s assume it is not jailbroken and that means you are stuck with whatever Apple and AppStore provides you.

What else will you lose on 2.0? All the apps must be ported. Not one GUI app will work. Not even Jiggy apps. Nothing, notta. This means you lose 500+ 3rd party apps.

What about installer? Nope, there’s no installer 2.0. (Cydia will be available, but there will not be anything to install yet).

What about AppStore?: AppStore is all about purchasing and paying for software. It’s not called iApps or iInstaller. It’s called AppStore. At this point, the best source of free apps will remain to be 1.1.4 and installer.

I already upgraded. What now? You can downgrade to 1.1.4 and bootneuter using the new baseband with 1.1.4. This should get you back to an unlocked state with the new baseband. Downgrade requires DFU mode, restore to 1.1.4, when you get error 1011, 1013, or 1015, use iLiberty+ to boot phone out of recovery mode. Worst case, if the new baseband cannot work with 1.1.4 you could use ienew or such and get back to the 1.1.4 baseband. This would require some steps such as ieraser (3.9) / ienew (4.6) then use bbupdater to program the 1.1.4 baseband back on. We’ll see where we’re at. I’ll make a guide if needed.

Then what should I do? Wait a bit. A solution will surely come. I will update this site with news as I get it. Check back daily.

What about pwnage? While pwnage should work on 2.0, it appears that the latest 2.0 betas have not been jailbroken. We will need to wait and see what happens.

What To Expect with 2.0

Author: BigBoss  //  Category: Speculation

There is so much speculation about what to expect with FW 2.0 in June with the launch of the app store. I often have questions like “won’t jailbreaking be obsolete?” and “won’t everyone’s apps just move into the app store?” Therefore, I decided to write a little article on what to expect and what not to expect with FW 2.0 and the SDK’s official release.

First, it is important to understand that none of the todays’ apps will run on 2.0. The frameworks have changed so you cannot run current apps. They all need to be recompiled. To make matters worse, they cannot just be recompiled. The developers will need to reinstall a new toolchain (a huge task) and then change their code around because many functions have changed. It will not be a fast task. Remember that many developers still haven’t even updated their apps to correctly support 1.1.3/4 so you can expect some apps will never be updated.

So let’s try some questions and answers to common questions I’ve had on this subject:

Q: I have 2.0 beta. Should I install this?

A: No. If you do, you will lose all your 3rd party apps. Installer cannot work as it has not been ported to 2.0 yet. Cydia has been ported and Cydia’s BSD commands but almost no app developers have ported apps.

Q: Will I still need to jailbreak on 2.0?

A: Probably yes. Most apps that are cool today will not run on the SDK. This is because Apple has very stringent rules as to what an app is allowed to do and not do. Apps cannot operate on system files, cannot work outside of their own apps directory or outside of the users directory. This is great for things like games. But summerboard, customize, categories, bossprefs, all these sorts of apps are impossible. Also, apps cannot stay running when you press home with the SDK. That means apps like colloQ, Mobile Chat must disconnect when you press home. Think of how annoying that is! You think emulators will be cool? Well there will be no way to get the ROMs onto the device. In short, jailbreaking will be very much alive because the SDK is just not enough.

Q: Will I be able to unlock 2.0? I have TMobile.

A: No one knows. Probably in time. The current beta’s can be unlocked but it is expected for this to be patched.

Q: Will the new 3G iPhone have v2.0?

A: Short answer, probably. Real answer, there is no confirmed 3G phone. It’s all speculation. It could be anything anytime. Who really knows.

Q: Will all your apps be in app store? Will they be free?

A: It’s not clear. So far all my apps break the “SDK” rules and are not able to be in appstore. If I do have apps that conform (maybe docs and speed dial type apps), I will probably charge $1-$2 in appstore while having the same thing for free on installer. It’s a motivator for those that jailbreak.

Q: Won’t appstore be real time while installer is just small time?

A: The installer community is probably near 800,000 based on the number of XML refreshes I see per day. The current community is really huge. It is not small time.
