I was given these instructions by user FutureBSD and have not tested them. Therefore, use them at your own risk and please leave comments as to whether or not these work. The original post comes from this forum.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR PHONE
1. You need to download two files:
x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw and iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw. You can get both of them over here:
http://users.on.net/thevillage/pwnage/win/
2. Make sure you have itunes 7.7 installed.
for vista: Click start then copy this into the search box and press enter after:
for XP: click start then run, then copy this into the run box:

3. Make a directory callled: Device Support
If it already exists, clear it.
4. copy x12220000_4_Recovery.ipsw into the Device Support folder you just created.
5. ok, you need to get your device into DFU mode. watch this video to see how:

6. Once your phone is in DFU mode and detected by iTunes (should be black screen on phone NOT itunes logo with usb cable), click on iphone in itunes, then hold the SHIFT key and click on restore.
7. Browse to the folder where you downloaded iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw and select it. itunes will then extract the file and you will see the ipod dev team’s pinapple logo pop up after a few seonds, like this:

8. when restoring has completed, it will ask you to connect to itunes, then re-do the activation process (download carrier settings)
9. Restore your backup! this should automatically be made. it should pop up right after downloading carrier settings, but you may also do it by right clicking your iphone on the left, and selecting “restore iphone”
10. That’s it, you’re done!

you have to change the file name from .zip to .ispw, by going to a folder–>tools–>folderoption–>view–>uncheck hide extention for known file type. then change the zip file to ispw.

This will jailbreak ur iphone 3g, not unlock it. Jailbreaking enables you to install 3d party apps, amongst other things. Unlocking for 3g is not yet available, but will undoubtedly be soon. Just have some patience :)

the jailbreak worked in the end.
I had to uninstall, iTunes, apple mobile support, quicktime and reinstall itunes 7.7 twice…
anyway, if any1 has similar probs I’d recommend doing the same.

It finally worked for me, i found two itunes folders on my comp and i made sure the recovery file was in both, and then i made sure my phone was put in correct DFU mode while itunes was open and did the restore, Working Great installed an app restarted the phone and still no problems.

I’m having a slight problem, I can’t figure out how to use cydia properly. (Or so I think)
I’m trying to download the sendsong app however, is not listed in cydia. (I tried looking in the Install tab, and Search tab, but it doesn’t seem to be there). Unlike Installer app, Cydia seems to have a very small list of things to download. Is this supposed to be like this? I thought Cydia was meant to be a replacement for Installer app.
If anyone could direct me/link me to a tutorial/guide explaining Cydia a bit further, I would appreciate it.

Cydia is another installer, just like the AppTap installer you’re used to. The problem is that the AppTap installer for 2.0 hasn’t been finished yet.
Cydia has a limited but growing number of applications. Only apps that have been ported to 2.0 or apps that partially function are available in Cydia. Read the blurb on the initial screen in Cydia re: porting from v1 to v2 to get an idea of what app writers are facing.

First of all let me say thanks for taking the time to provide this for us.
I got an iPhone 3G and was able to jailbreak it with this method.
Everything is working fine except I’m having a slight issue.
1)Voicemail doesn’t seem to be working (when I hit voicemail, it doesn’t do anything)
2)When I’m not on wifi I get an E icon. Now I never owned the first iPhone, but isn’t that the old icon for “Edge”? Does that mean I’m somehow using Edge instead, or is it still 3G but has an old icon? In which case, why is this occurring?

If the phone can’t maintain a 3G link it will drop down to edge.
With the current firmware and radio code the iPhone 3G is proving pretty rotten at keeping the 3G link up in less than perfect signal situations..hopefully an update will improve things.

Oh yeah..re: the voicemail issue. Are you on ATT an and an iPhone plan with VV? If so, do you have any voicemails saved on the phone or waiting to be listened to?
I notived that the general unresponsiveness of the UI can cause a lag in activating the voicemail tab, but if there are saved voicemails they should start right up when you click them.

I’m on AT&T (can you be on anything else right now if you have a 3G? hehe). I didn’t get a chance to set up my voicemail however, I will use a friends phone call myself and leave a voicemail and see how that works.
As for signal, I’m currently getting a pretty bad signal in my house and since I’ve been connected through wifi all this time I guess I just had not noticed.
So a quick question, if my signal is strong does it switch automatically to 3G? If so, does the icon change to 3G?

This Jailbreaks your iPhone 3G, it does not unlock it. For now there isn’t an iPhone 3G unlock however, there should be one in the near future.

Do you have an iPhone 3G or 2G?
If you read the bootneuter app note/info you will see it says is for 2G. So far there isn’t an unlock for 3G.

I had the same problem with the itunes error 6 message. I tried everything and couldn’t get it to work. I was finally able to get it restored by having my buddy pwn it on a mac. It sucks that I messed with it for an hour and could never get it to work on XP. Works the first on his mac though.

I’m in Australia and have an updated 2.0.1 3G iphone that is unlocked from the carrier I started with, if I use the above procedure will it automatically relock the phone to the current carrier I am with? I would prefer to keep it unlocked.

Phones purchased unlocked from the carrier can never be locked again. Unless you do something like erase your baseband perhaps. But that can’t be done on a 3g.

Hey, jailbroken 2.0 and then 2.01 and both times my 3g will no longer switch onto the 3g network. stays on edge no matter what i do. Anyone know of this problem?

After following all the steps, i put my simcard, t-mobile, i saw
The SIM card inserted in this iphone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iphone. Plz insert the SIM card that came w/ ur iphone or visit a supported carrier’s store to receive a replacement SIM card.
What should i do?

hi,
I tried to use winpwn and when I went to do the restore in itunes I didnt know how to open the custom ipsw so I started the restore the normal way and got an error 1604.
I have tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling twice and i have tried just doing a normal restore I get error 1604 again, I also tried your method and get error 1604 and once I get this error and restart my pc my audio driver stops working.
I just bought the iphone 3g and havent used it once……
PLEASE HELP!

thank God i did it it worked, i uninstalled i tunes , quicktime, bonjour, an apple update application. at this point i had a driver issue for usb so i updated it using driver genius.
I think the error 1604 is a communication error between iphone and pc. I remember going into msconfig and customizing the startup application and i unchecked itunes helper which supposedly helps the iphone communicate with itunes so i think that was the issue.
what i would like to know is know that I have 2.0 firmware how can i upgrade it?
If i upgrade firmware through itunes will my phone no longer be jailbroken?
How do I get 2.01 or 2.02 jailbroken upgrade?

i have iphone 3g from vodafone portugal!
i followed all the steps many many times and allways the same error(1600)…i don’t what to do more!please someone hepl me!!
p.s. the iphone has the original firmware, i never updated it!

If you are receiving a 1600/1604 error on a windows vista machine from trying to install pwnage, do the following:
Go to control panel/programs and features/delete everything that has to do with apple: itunes, bonjour, quicktime, apple software update, apple mobile device support.
now, go to your C:\Users\(username)\AppData
there should be 2 folders: Local and Roaming
1st - go into Local and delete the Apple and Apple Computer folders. Then go into Roaming and delete the Apple Computer folder.
(if you are unable to see these folders, that is because they are hidden on your machine. Go to Control Panel/Folder Options - under the View tab, select show hidden files and folders)
Now you should be able to see the folder AppData and the other folders associated.
so basically, you just deleted everything associated with apple on your computer. Now restart your comp…when you boot up, do a google search for Itunes 7.7 - that is the only version that will install the pwnage on your iphone 3g without getting errors.
after you download and install itunes 7.7 - follow all of the instructions at the top of this page and you’ll be golden.

Hi,
I am now in UK
I bought a Chinese iPhone 2.1
They actually gave me a Hong Kong one, and unlocked it to work with my Voda sim, and a BT mobile sim (really another Voda).
My problem is, I have installed a number of apps unsing Cydia and the phone app (the main app!!) does not work.
All sims are recognised (Voda and Orange) and it will take INCOMING calls but when I hit phone it goes to the phone keypad, sits there for 5 seconds or so then goes back to the main springboard!! I can use data, just not a PHONE!!
Help please - could it be a new app I installed?
