When 2.0.2 came out, I wrote a nice post about how iPhone firmware 2.0.2 sucks. Now 2.1 is out and let me tell you, it is fantastic. Let’s get started.
1) 3g reception is so much better. The new baseband, v2. 11.07 comes with 2.1. The baseband is so much better. For the first time ever I can actually get 3g in my house! 2.0 came with 1.45.01 which was ok. 2.0.1 came with 1.48.02 and it was horrible. 2.0.2 came with 2.08 and it was much better (similar to 1.45). Now 2.11.07 is way better than any of the previous versions. This is a serous improvement. Note: 2g reception is identical. The baseband on 2g did not update. No better, no worse on 2g.
2) Appstore Works! Apple finally solved the app mapping issue (sort of). I have been bitching about this problem since 2.0. Once you have a lot of apps or certain apps installed, AppStore becomes basically useless. Many people have experienced a spinning wheel of death after installing an app because the iPhone Springboard mapping agent had to remap all the files on the iPhone everytime something was installed. This has been solved via a cache file. So new apps get added and the file does not need to be rebuilt everytime. The result: you can use your AppStore! And Cydia! Yay.
3) The lag is gone. Finally all the lag is gone! I can type an SMS and not be 20 letters ahead of the iPhone. Overall speed is equal to 1.1.4 again. Finally.
4) Sync time is fixed. While it used to take 30-120 minutes to backup my iPhone, now it doesn’t. Apple finally realized that my computer with an internet connection can also pull the files off appstore. Instead of backing up my files, it just remembers what I had installed and downloads it again in iTunes. This is how it should be. The backups are usable again.
5) Mail sync. For the first time, I restored my backups and the mail app did not crash. No need for “bossprefs: fix user dir permissions” this time around. It just works how it should.

I had an error as well, but download the 2.1 firmware from this site and save it somewhere. Then open itunes, put your iphone in DFU mode (turn it off then hold power & home, then release power when you see the screen come on). Once it’s in DFU mode (iTunes will tell you it is) then hold down shift and click the restore button in iTunes. You then get a pop-up that allows you to specify what firmware you want it to load.
Takes a while and you’ll have to a) use quickpwn to ulock it, and b) reload everything in (contacts, tunes, settings, apps etc) but this sorted my issues right out and i’m now using 2.1 with no issues at all

I have a pwned 2G iphone with 2.0.2 and I am on windows vista. Badly I wanted FW 2.1 Winpwn is not available so I tried this.
1. I downloaded custom ipsw from this site they have different files select and download the required file.

2. I backed up my iphone in itunes 8.
3. Restored the phone using the custon ipsw I have downloaded using shift and restore trick.
Every thing went on well. It is fast and stable. I dont find any problem so far.

Hey, read the filenames. There are custom 2.1 FW for 2g and 3g phones. There are custom-activate-nobootlogos-1000mbroot etc etc. There are several options just read the filename

The only way I’ve been able to do this is to update it normally through iTunes then either restore the iPhone with a custom firmware or to Quickpwn it.

I agree with everything you said, except the extent of the email fix. Unfortunately the email program still crashes (or fails to properly start-up) just like before when you use Exchange for email and have a very large mailbox with lots of sub-folders. The ActiveSync bug is still there!!!!
I had to resort to using IMAP for the email and ActiveSync for Contacts and Calendar…
–> Also, any idea about the grey text under the icons??? Any way to make it white/brighter?

I easily updated my 2.01 jailbroken iphone to 2.1 with pwnage for 2.1. I am having some trouble with Cydia. It is very hit and miss. I can install some applications but not others. Have tried for hours without success to install the open ssh program. I keep getting messages that say “Source Error POSIX: Connection reset by peer”
Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a way to fix it? I really need to have the open ssh program so I can get into my iphone to install bits and pieces. Any advice would be very gratefully received.

i have windows vista and i`m using winpwn 2.5 beta 2, since yesterday i have try so many times on my 2g to install fw 2.1 or 2.02 and everything have been imposible because winpwn 2.5 beta 2 always crash almost at the end of the process, when i try to put the phone into dfu mode, the phone is able to get into dfu mode, but when winpwn try to set the phone winpwned in order for me to be able on itunes it CRASH, but this only happend with 2.1 and 2.0.2 fw, i did the process with 2.0.1 and it work ok.
any idea on what do i need to do???

YES! i totally agree. 2.1 seems SO stable (knock on my knockOnWood app)!!
it’s interesting to hear the details of the problems, like the app mapping crashes and the long backups, i didn’t know why that happened, but i had all those symptoms and they are now all gone. i even finally got Categories to work.
customize is hosed, however. the custom strings work but no custom images. i wish winterboard had more of the system images such as badge, smsbubbles, etc. They have a lot of great stuff like battery or retroPhoneDialer but i could use some sms bubble choices without having to apply a whole theme.
anyway, the devteam rocks, don’t let anyone tell you any different.

Clarification needed on Baseband when upgrading to 2.1
I’ve created a custom image using Mac Pwning tool. Now a lot has been written about the improvements with the new baseband and improved reception with 3G. Will the customized image I just created give me the baseband update as well? Or do I need to upgrade with the 2.1 firmware from apple and then apply the pwned image on top of it?

OK, thanks that clarifies it. When you went to 2.02 you must have first updated to the vanilla 2.02 and then pwned the phone that’s the only way you can get the 02.08.01 baseband. The latest baseband with 2.1 is 02.11.07, so the pwned image is not updating the baseband and that’s what I wanted to clarify.

if you use the hacked firmware you will lose everything on your phone. To update without losing you have to upgrade through iTunes and then qwickpwn. Either way you will lose all apps installed by cydia or installer.

Okay, everything is now working well EXCEPT my sms application. For some reason I cannot type out an sms. As soon as I hit the first key on the keyboard in my sms message the phone crashes back to springboard. Tried fixing permissions vis bigboss tool but nothing works. It is vexing to say the least. I got a very nice problem with my 2g iPhone after updating it to 2.1 and that is the carrier name does not come but it shows the signal bar. If I restart the springboard by bossprefs then the carrier name comes again but if I restart the phone then the carrier name is gone again!!

Hi I have upgreated to FW 2.1 . and mow the internet keeps crashing like a mother f***er. HELP
I have itunes 8 and vista 64 bit.
these are the steps I took to updat(might help i trouble shooting)
1 shut down i tunes 7.7 used tash manager to shut down all itunes relater proesses
2 downloaded itunes 8
3 installed
4 hooked up iphone with FW 2.0.2 jailbroken
5 updated the FW
6 once compled my music was still on the phone same with my contacts and calendar apontments
7 non of my winterboard themes were on the phone tho as well as all the home made(non app store ) apps(I know this would happen)

I updated every thing yesterday and it went fine till I put in mobileinstallation crack. It froze and It was stuck on the apple logo. I left it on for an hr and still no luck. I tried redoing my phone with the custom fw that I was provided in this post and it wouldn’t let me use the fw. Please help!!

1. Copy the patched MobileInstallation file over to “/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework”
2. Set permissions to that new file to 775
3. Remove file : /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist else you won’t be able to see Cydia apps
4. Reboot your iPhone - IMPORTANT! Otherwise Apps will not install!

Any program that launches another program has to be updated for 2.1. Among those working are BBprefs, QuickGold and likely Dock. Not working:
gLauncher
appflow
websearch
etc. etc.

agreed. The 2.1 is a winner for bugs but not really for any new enhancements which at least we should get some basic stuff like cut and paste. LOL apple keeps giving us crumbs so they can ride the wave… longer I guess..

I mean that they do it in the same way so there is no chance in performance between the two. One creates a pre-patched firmware while the other patches the firmware on the device already. Since the end result is the same; the performance is the same.
I personally havent noticed a decrease in performance after jailbreaking. I ran 2.1 for 2 days before I jailbroke it and I don’t notice any differences regarding performance.

I am not sure how it could be removed after bing installed but YES you can decide NOT to install it at all when you Quickpwn. If you don’t want it installed you just need to uncheck it when you are running the quickpwn process. Goodluck!

To notice the lag and slow performance have two iphone side by side and simply open an app at the same time. Clearly the JB iphone compare to the default iphone lags and crashes more apps. Can someone confirm this? After jealbreakin and restoring my iphone 3g FW2.1 it’s back to normal . The DEVs team needs to look into this.

Using 2.1 I don’t notice any lag or crashes…I don’t think a difference unless you have some sort of 3rd party app that is buggy. This could even come from the app store so no difference.

I’ve methodically installed and tested performance after each application to see the effect.
Jailbreaking with QuickPwn does not impact performance.
Performance hits come solely from 3rd party apps.
Of the apps I tested:
One of my favorite apps “BigBoss Prefs” has had the greatest performance impact… almost quadrupling shutdown time. Unfortunately, uninstalling does not undo the damage.

I would like to ask something. As far as I read on every blog and websites, most of firmware 2.1 users gained so much battery improvement. Now the question is;
is this related specifically with “baseband” update or only with the firmware itself?
You know, if you are interested in soft unlock, you should not make a baseband update, like me.
As a result, my battery seems the same as previous firmware. Should I make a baseband update to see the battery improvement? I may prefer battery improvement instead of soft unlock possibility. (My baseband 1.48, firmware 2.1)

I have completely unscientific evidence that just upgrading to the 2.1 kernel and applications helps battery life. I’m still running modem software 02.08.01 and my morning commute consumption has gone from 11% to 5%. I still need to charge daily though.

I second that opinion. I am on Firmware 2.1 and baseband 1.45, not only do I have an improved 3g signal (comparable to friends who are on vanilla 2.1) but also have significantly improved battery life. My unscientific hypothesis is that the new baseband in general has alleviated the congestion on 3g networks thereby giving older baseband phones an improved signal as well.

Clean Install:
First, Sync up your iPhone 2G 3G to your iTunes(8)to backup all your apps and apps from appstore except the apps from Cydia. I’m sure theres a way to that. Anyway, when your done backing it up run an Update from iTunes on your iPhone 2.x.x to 2.1.When you done run a restore from iTunes on 2G will remain unlocked so no worries. These steps will do a clean install.
Step 2: Download QuickPwn2.1 or Pwnagetool2.1 for mac. I used PWNAGETool2.1 to create a custom Firware this step only if you would like to use your own BootLogo otherwise Quickpwn2.1 is soooo much easier will take no less than 3 mins after you do a clean restore..
Step 3: I used WindowsXP to update my iPhone custom FW created on MAC using PWNAGEtool2.1 then shift+Click update.. dont forget you have to be on the recovery mode to do this..This step will take less than 5mins. Voila! You have a Clean FW install and its unlocked for 2G, 3G will only JB. but atleast you wont have any problem with crashing and conflicting thins… I’ve done it on 10 iPhone 5(3G) and 5(2G)it works like a charm… Try it to see for your self… Thanks To the Dev Team for all the Hard work helping out our friends all over the world making used of their iphones… ALOHA.. Also, the Cellular Data Networking tab in settings-> network disappeared a while back, so no set APN option, so popping in another sim doesnt restore connectivity (mail, safari, cydia, etc still fail)

I can no longer send email using my Verizon POP account.
I can use .mac to send email but need to use the other.
I reloaded the previous firmware version, but can no longer send email from my 3G phone.
I get an error message: “Cannot Send Mail. The username is invalid.”
Anyone tell me how I can get the phone to send email?

With yesterday’s update to Winterboard a several performance bottlenecks were resolved:
- Shutdown time has returned to 5 seconds or less.
- Startup time is around 30 seconds.
- Winterboard app is now extremely fast.
- Keyboard lag seems to be gone.
Opening apps continue to have increased lag time of 2-4 seconds (especially SMS).
Thanks to Jay for addressing most of the performance issues in Winterboard in a very timely manner.
This was a great update.
I will also ask BigBoss if there is a way to enhance Boss Prefs or reverse it’s performance impact.
Well see, it may not be a priority for him.

Used Qwkpawn on a 2G phone. Worked great, but cannot get SERVICE on the phone. Tried Pwnage, cannot select other than the 2.1 version .ipsw file AND software will not recognize the two bootloaders. I’m told Pwnage is the way to go by clicking activation tab off to get the Fido service back. Need HELP!!!

New issue. I have a jailbroken iPhone 3G 16GB and even when I jailbroke previously this happened.
Problem: I make a playlist, or add sings to my iphone, sync it up, and they’re on the phone. Then if I do another sync on the phone later on, after shutting down IT8 (or 7.7 previously) I lose any songs I added. If I do a sync all music, I get everything in my library which I don’t want, but my playlists are all missing. Any ideas on why this happens?
