Introduction:
So you have your 2.0 iPhone and you can install thousands of apps from AppStore. What’s all this commotion about jailbreaking? Why would you need to jailbreak? What does it offer? In this post, I will cite some of the most compelling reasons to jailbreak your iPhone. I will continually update this post as changes occur.
Risk Free:
Jailbreaking is not unlocking! It is risk free. Everything that works before jailbreaking continues to work after. Jailbreaking only adds features. Jailbreaking is risk free and cannot void your warranty. You can simply restore in iTunes at anytime to get back to a factory state. You are not alone, many people are doing it. Several hundred thousand people are jailbreaking! For understanding of jailbreak vs unlock read my terminology post.
How To:
If you decide after reading this that you wish to jailbreak, head on over to our guides section and find the guide or method that works best for you. I recommend one of the pwnage methods.
Reason #1: Winterboard + Customization
Winterboard allows you to do this:

Or this:

or this:

This is just the “tip of the iceberg”. There is so much more you can do. You can have web content as your background. My theme consists of 350 images that rotate every 15 seconds in a slide show. Here is a sample of some of these images:

You can even have video playing as your wallpaper.
Video Wallpaper Sample
Reason #2: Jailbreak to fix Apple’s bugs
There are bugs in iPhone OS. Jailbreakers can fix some of these. Some examples:
1) Mail app crashes after restoring backup from iTunes. Apple’s solution is to not restore your backup. That’s right. Lose all your contacts! If you jailbreak, bossprefs “fix user dir permissions” button solves this.
2) iPhone will not boot after installing too many apps and you have to restore. There is a way to fix this problem by editing some files in SSH. Soon the entire issue will be solved.
3) Camera fix as described here.
4) You are limited to 9 pages of apps. After that, your appstore installs just don’t show up and there is no way to run them. If you jailbreak, you can use QuickGold, Categories, or other launchers to launch your apps. You can even put them in folders (more on Categories below).
Reason #3: Tethering
Tether your iPhone to your PC and use your iPhone as a modem. This is possible using the “Modem” app in Cydia. Appstore removed the only tethering app and will not allow this. You can use this to tether either EDGE or 3g. Tethering 3g gives you a nice broadband connection for your PC.
Reason #4: Cycorder and Snapture
Cycorder is a free full featured video recorder for iPhone. Turn your iPhone into a mini camcorder. The quality is ok at 15 fps with sound. The recordings are stored in mjpeg compression codec so they can be played back on a computer. (Not allowed in AppStore).
Snapture is a fantastic camera upgrade that allows you to take multiple pictures rapidly and in general makes your camera much easier to use. (Not allowed in AppStore).
Reason #5: Launchers
There are now some fantastic springboard add-ons for iPhone. These are OS level enhancements and are therefore, not allowed on AppStore. Those that do not have these are really missing out.
Quick Gold - This is an amazing app that is just like QuickSilver on OSX. You tap home once at springboard and type in your search and it instantly finds what you are looking for. The search is type-as-you-go and fast. In other words, if you type “B” it will bring up all the results with B. If you now press “o” it will filter to “Bo” etc. You can search apps, contacts, web clips and more.

This is a must have addition to iPhone OS. Note that this is implemented as a mobile substrate plugin which means it becomes part of springboard. There is no extra daemon running that drains your battery or uses your CPU. Outstanding!
Dock 3.0 - This is an app switcher that is always available. It is hard to describe, so check out the video link for a demo. This is also a mobile substrate plugin so there is no extra daemon running on your device.
Stacks - If you’re an OSX user, you probably already know what this is. But it’s a neat way to put items onto your dock that you want to get to quickly and have them pop up in a cool menu. Check it out.
Categories - So I cant write this whole article without at least showcasing one of my own contributions. So here is Categories. This allows you to make folders on your springboard and move those pages of icons into folders. Think Games, Apps, Networking, etc. Reduce 9 pages of apps down to just 1!
Reason #6: Backgrounder
There are severe limitations imposed on AppStore apps. One of these is “no background processes.” This means that if you have an app, such as an instant messenger app, every time you press home to go to something else, the app is closed out. You are disconnected. You get no messages, no notification, nothing.
Backgrounder is an attempt to fix this. Backgrounder allows you to select an app that you want to allow to run in the background. Then when you press home, that app will keep running. Perfect for an IRC app or such that you do not want to get disconnected everytime you tap the home key. This adds critical functionality that you cannot get unless you jailbreak!
Reason #7: Cydia
There are many other apps available only for jailbreakers. These are apps that Apple has either declined from Appstore for one reason (usually they break one of their ridiculous rules) or the developer doesn’t own a MAC or doesn’t feel like paying $100 to distribute their app. For a list of what’s avaiable in Cydia, load Cydia. You can check out what is in my repository here. Many of these apps offer functionality that is just not available in Appstore. For example:
Flashlight - Better than Appstore’s many flashlights because it makes the screen brighter. What good is a dim light? Sheesh.
BossPrefs - Hide unwanted icons on your springboard. Dont use stocks or iTunes? Hide it so you do not need to see it. Access quick toggles to handy features such as bluetooth, wifi, EDGE.
Macman - A pacman like game only available on Cydia.
BiteSMS - A cheaper alternative to SMS for many countries.
iBlacklist - Filter incoming calls and SMS!
Reason #8: Take Control of Your System
Would you want to own a PC where only Dell decided what you could do with it? Jailbreaking opens your device up to you deciding what to do with it. You can install a BSD unix subsystem and SSH. You can use a mobile terminal. It’s just like a real mini computer! I even used iPhone SSH shell and iPhone GCC to compile most the applications I released on this site!
Reason #9: Unlocking
Finally, and I almost decided to leave this out, but the only way to unlock your iPhone and put it onto another carrier is by jailbreaking it. The unlocking apps will require system level patching and activation all of which can only be done via jailbreaking. At the time of this writing, you cannot unlock an iPhone 3g. Note also that you need not unlock to jailbreak. They are two separate things.

Thanks for the BRILLIANT post!! Thank you sooo much for reason number 2, point 2, about iPhone not booting after installing many apps, I had that problem 3 times this week stuck on Apple logo at bootup causing me to do a restore + 5 hours restoring from back up.
I can’t seem to use quickpwn to jailbreak anymore, worked first time round but now just hangs at the point after the pinapple logo appears

I had the same problem…just restore your iphone…(hold the home button and connet to pc and then it auto. restores via itunes) then your Iphone is blanc and then you can do a jailbreak. After you did the jailbreak itunes tells you to restore to your previous settings…and after that you have to do a syncronise…that’s all
Good luck

Really nice theme you have, I’ve seen it in Cydia but never installed because the size scarred me. Now I think I’ll give it a try.
What I’m really waiting on Cydia is an app/option for Winterboard to set different User Wallpapers for my Springboard and my Lock Screen.

Why does a restore undo a jailbreak but not an unlock ? Both are accomplished via code (vs. making a physical change). So there is no way to undo an unlock ?

BigBoss Reply:

Jailbreak is a process of modifying operating system files on a hard disk (flash drive in this case). Unlock is a process of updating a baseband.
In PC terms think of it like this. Unlock is like flashing your system BIOS. Jailbreak is like formatting your hard drive and installing a new OS.

I did not forget to mention this because it is not true. In some very rare cases this bug can appear but if it is not related to Cydia. If anything it falls in my post #2 where it is an Apple bug that jailbreaking will help solve. You make it sound like everything is peachy until you run Cydia. Wrong.

What I heard was that once u jail break your iphone, it will leave a ‘trail’.
[Reply]
Ron Reply:
September 13th, 2008 at 2:55 am
It *cannot* void your warranty. This is for the simple reason that a jailbreak is completely reversible by simply restoring a stock firmware from Apple, leaving no trace of a previous jailbreak.
This is also why a jailbreak is *risk-free*: you could get your phone into a completely “broken” state (by jailbreaking incorrectly or screwing with the file system after jailbreaking) and it can always be restored with a stock firmware.

Awesome info and reasons.
One thing if I may.
A silly question but is it better to have an older 2G or newer 3G iphone.
Aside from the 2G being unlockable and 3G not yet and it not being a concern because it will always on the same network. Yes the 3G can do GPS and MS mail but with out data plan not a major benefit. At the end of the day both can be jailbroken and apps can be used. So this is why the silly question of which one is really better or have answered my own question?

I should also include I”m using Iphone G3 (16GB), on a windows XP system. I used WINPWN 2.5 and everything was cool. Added some apps thru Cydia/Installer. I moved my icons around on the phone’s home screen, and moved all but the phone button out of the bottom portion of the phone. Then when I click on phone it shows my keypad, but it doesn’t favorites, contacts, keypad, voicemail buttons are there, but it doesn’t say the names of the buttons, doesn’t allow me to click on them, doesn’t let me dial. I can only call people directly from my contacts folder, and I can’t see if/when I have a voice mail (I tried calling myself from my home line just to test if I needed to set-up voice mail again. Any help? I just put it back to the original Apple 2.02 firmware until I can figure this out, or someone else has the answer. I looked back thru this forum. I tried to do the Use Boss Prefs to fix user directory permissions…
Click on ‘more’ in Boss Prefs…then hit ‘Fix User Dir Permission’…

You’re going to put your iPhone in DFU mode with the following steps.
1. Connect iPhone to computer with iTunes open.
2. Hold the Home button until your iPhone appears on iTunes.
3. iTunes will then tell you that it has detected a device in DFU mode and will have to be restored (If you have a previous backup of your phone, you can sync the backup after your phone has been restored).
4. Jailbreak.

Are you saying you used both Quickpwn and Winpwn to do one jailbreak? If you did, that may be the problem because you only need one program to do it. jailbreaking a jailbroken device causes problems, so just enter DFU mode, restore, and then use Quickpwn to jailbreak. Done.

I’m a WM 6.1 user, and it’s a shame apple requires people to “backdoor” jailbreak their phone to go outside their apps store for genuinely good apps. Microsoft isn’t exactly “open” in this regard either, but there is soooo much freeware out there for WM!
I’ve so far been very happy with the range of apps available for WM, but without a doubt the iPhone is more user friendly/entertaining than any WM device I’ve seen. If I would have know about “jailbreaking” before I went WM, it may have changed my mind. Excellent thread!

Please help. I have been trying to use Quickpwn (windows version) to jailbreak my iPhone3G 16GB for hours. Every time I try to use Quickpwn it stops on the page: “Wait for your iPhone to connect in recovery mode.” All instructions after that for putting the phone in DFU mode remain grayed out forever. The steps never advance to: “Hold down the home button for five seconds.” I have tried going into DFU mode anyway but to no avail. Just to let you know, it’s Windows XP SP3, Itunes 8.0, and the newest Quickpwn. Helpppppppppppppppp

Quickpwn 2.1-1 will work. I’ve had problems with Quickpwn running on Vista. But 2.1-1 should work with XP and Vista.

Hello, cool review… I do have one question though. What happens when you upgrade the phone to a newer fw? do you need to jailbreak it everytime? I mean do you have to follow the pattern fw 2.0 jailbreak for 2.0, fw 2.1 jailbreak for 2.1, etc? Would you recomend using MAC or Windows for pwning the device (which si the same right?)? I only own linux and windows pcs so…
thanks man, hats off.

when you upgrade to a newer firmware, everything is erased, including the jailbreak data. An app on Cydia called Aptbackup will backup your jailbreak data into a folder onto your PC.
I prefer Mac to pwn a device, but Windows will work as well.

So I followed your method to jailbreak my phone…
And now I wish I hadn’t done it.
Sure the video recording is great, but Installer is crap. I can barely download anything because Installer freezes 2 out of 3 times.
And Installer is in Spanish!
Any way to fix these issues?

Use Cydia dummy. Installer for 2.0 and higher firmware is in beta still where as Cydia is more reliable and safe then Installer ever was, even on old firmware. And more of the jailbreak apps are available through Cydia anyways.

Use Cydia. Thats why its there. Just tap the search tab on the bottom right and type in the app you want. Click install and the app should be on your springboard page after it finishes installing.

IMHO to jailbreak iPhone 3G down to 2.1… firmware is not practical. All applications are available at App Store and aesthetically its original looks are much better than any homespun crap of themes and wallpapers for iPhone that I have seen before. I do not care to use it as a modem or remote or external storage device for my PC. It is a grand looking easy-to-use mobile phone which is superb to use at any place where there is a WiFi access to the Internet is available…. No need to brainwash people into wasting their time tampering with the device…
You can not control everything, BigBoss…

Got a question about “dock”
Will it work if you have “5 icon dock” installed??
Will it work if you have made your dock invis. with winterboard??
I installed it and couldn’t get it to work , got it to work once but i couldn’ duplicate it.
also this was on my itouch not my iphone.
