Right. So everyone is plenty excited to update to 2.0.2 to fix all those nasty bugs in 2.0 and 2.0.1 right? Well don’t bother. As far as I can tell it fixes nothing… unless you are on a 3g.
Before I say any more, I will say that the 3g baseband update to 2.08 provided me with a significant increase in signal bars for EDGE. I still cannot get 3g in my office, but my EDGE went from 2 bars to 5. If you have a 3g device, I suspect this, alone, is worth the update. Note though, the baseband update will probably neuter your ability to unlock with the upcoming unlocker from the dev team. Other benefit noted is that 3g to EDGE fallback now can occur without losing service which is nice if you’re on a call and it switches during you call.
Now then. The official release notes for the 2.0.2 firmware says “bug fixes”. So what bugs are fixed?
Reports on the internet say these bugs are fixed:
Sync time: Sync time with appstore apps takes forever. And I mean in the range of 1-2 hours. Anyways, this is not changed on 2.0. The sync time is stll horrible.
Stability: So far, 2.0.2 has crashed for me more times than 2.0 and 2.0.1 combined. In fact, the device managed to crash just sitting idle doing nothing! I mean literally the iPhone was in the dock and a few minutes later, apple logo and rebooting. App crashes have actually increased since the update. I have two devices updated and both exhibit the same behavior. If you are looking for increased stability, stay 2.0.2 does not provide it.
Contacts Lag: I never saw contacts lag in the first place and I still don’t see it now. Perhaps that is because I’m a hermit and don’t have enough contacts :)
Signal Bars: Ok significant gain due to 2.08 baseband for 3g. If you have a 2g, you do not get a baseband update and there will be no change here. This means if you were unlocked on 2g you will still be after the upgrade. When pwnage comes out, upgrading with pwnage will disable the baseband update (most likely) and you will not benefit from this. I am not sure if I get 3g from more locations around town or not though. I will take my iPhone out for a drive and test it. Update: I actually do get 3g more than I did on 2.0.1, but the same as I got on 2.0. 2.0.1 really was horrible for the 3g baseband.
AppStore / Cydia Lag: This is the most ridiculous bug and it’s still not fixed. Want to reproduce it easily? Install “Platinum Sudoku” followed by “Super Monkey Ball” and good luck ever installing anything from Cydia or AppStore again. It’s not as bad if you avoid the above two app installs, but it still is a pain in the back side. This is still not fixed. Our only hope is that Saurik can neuter this in Winterboard/ Mobile Substrate.
Mail Sync: As always, my mail crashed after I restored my backup just like 2.0, 2.01 etc. I can’t believe Apple would allow this problem to continue. Anyways, BossPrefs ‘fix user dir permission’ solves the problem. I guess it’s another example how the hacking community managed to fix one of Apple’s bugs. For those that don’t jailbreak? Well, I guess you can’t restore your backup.

The modem firmware baseband on 3g iPhones with this firmware is now 2.08.01. On 2.0.1, it was 1.48.02. This is a significant rev in modem firmware. Probably bad news for unlockers. But those that just want solid service, it’s a decent 3g update from 2.0.1 for this reason alone.

I found a way to fix ALL of these errors AND the lagginess!! I downgraded my 2G iPhone back to 1.1.4. Now I have it all again: free software, speed, minimal crashing. I plan on staying away from 2.0 for the near future.

Unfortunately it won’t because springboard still has to enumerate all the apps :(
The lag you are seeing is a springboard lag.

I did a fresh restore using apple’s 2.0.2 firmware then hopped on my friends windows box and used quickpwn to jailbreak it. I too was experiencing many problems in the past, but since doing this everything has been much smoother. I also am noticing an exponential increase in my battery life. Not sure where that come from.
I am reinstalling my cydia apps slowly one by one and monitoring the battery in hopes I can fully unerstand why the increase.

Yes I agree! firmware 2.0.2 is terrible.
Apple FIX NOTHING!
Firmware 2.0.2 is worst than 2.0.1 and 2.0
“I really disappointed how come Apple can out such downgrade firmware”
The Stability is crazy!
I manage to get:
Firmware 2.0 - 4 page of full apps
Firmware 2.0.1 - 5 page of full apps
Firware 2.0.2 - < than 3 page of full apps and it start crash!!!!! What!!!!
NO UPDATES is capable after reach it maximum because it start crash.
And always install big file size apps before smaller size apps…because more page you have, it get more easy to crash!
APPLE NOW IS CRAP THAN MICROSOFT!!

I have noticed it is worse with some apps installed than with others. For example, supermonkey ball + platinum sudoku seems to be a killer. I’m sure there are others. I have noticed if you install any of these combinations that you get these problems much more. Also, once installed uninstalling them doesn’t solve it. You have to restore from scratch and avoid the combination in the first place.

I upgraded that thought this was the worst update ever. Crashed like crazy. By then I disabled some of my winterboard themes. I had like 5 or 6 running. And the phone is smooth as can be. Only problem I’ve had is keyboard lag in the SMS app every now and then, other than that seems pretty solid. 4 pages of apps. 2.0.2 unlocked and jailbroken. Iphone 2G

2.0.1 fixed most of the bugs for me that were on 2.0 and now 2.0.2 made my iPhone even worse than 2.0. I’ve got the horrible lag back in SMS which 2.0.1 got rid off but 2.0.2 brought it back:-(
QuickPwn although made my iPhone run a little bit quicker. The only keyboard lag now is in SMS.

I don´t understand:
- I didn´t have *any* crash (4 pages full of icons) in 2 days
- Everything snappier than ever
- iTunes syncronized 4Gb Music, 600Mb videos, 12 Appstore Apps, all contacts, calender in a few minutes
PS: I *did* FORMAT my iPhone BEFORE installing 2.0.2 (that full format done on iPhone´s Settings that takes near 1h).
As 2.0.2 installation keeps apps/files of previous versions, that could be the problem of your phones AFAIK

Regarding the AppStore / Cydia Lag, I just wanted to clarify as I am seeing some huge issues 2.0.1. I have been on it since it was pwned, using my mac, but this week all of a sudden, I goto install Dock through Cydia, and it is stuck on the installing screen (before it gets to the Close Cydia button), it stayed there for over 30 minutes, and got incredibly warm. So I rebooted the device several times, it never got past the pineapple, I eventually had to force it into restore mode and restore my backup….I have had to do this several times at this point, ANYTHING I install is either hit or miss….this is a completely new issue to me, and I have done numerous restores at this point….is this the issue you’re talking about, or is this new?

This is a full erase option in advanced settings of pwnage or winpwn. This will not solve any issues. It is only for paranoid folks that plan to sell a phone and don’t want an expert somehow extracting the data off of it. The format you use now is fine, it is like a format on a computer hard drive. The disk wipe option that takes an hour writes a bunch of 0’s and 1’s to each sector to make sure that the data cannot be extracted later. It’s a waste of an hour for anyone that is not selling the device and it will not solve any of the above issues.

I recommened: Do NOT Update to 2.0.2
Reason: Slow, and reinstall all apps, many problems like calling lower phone call signal.
I recommened: UPDATE/STICK to 2.0
Reason: Now via Cydia you can do half of things such as video recording MxTube Camera with zoom etc…
And via mininova.org the BGRMK Packages have a readme with the instructions and all the AppStore packages for free and how to install them… I have 6 Pages of full (Half AppStore & Cydia). Apps.

anyways best downgrade to 2.0.1 pwn and wait till 2.1 expect all props and cons afterwards we hope it goes well to ever decide to upgrade for a less buggy Operating System

I too had the mail app crash problem with 2.0.2 install. Some things i noticed:
1. Installation of 2.0.2 too 2+ hours (unlike 2.0.1)
2. Restore of my data took a long time
3. I too resorted to BossPrefs “fix dir perms” to get passed mail crash
4. Did a backup
5. Did a restore of firmware 2.0.2 - this went fast
6. Did a restore of user data - again this went fast
7. Mail worked fine
So I think there may be something getting wacked in the firmware update that screws up permissions and doing a user data restore doesn’t fix it. Weird that is broken one time, but not the next.

2.0.2 killed my iPhone. The update rendered my 3G (I have a 1st gen also) unusable and I had to restore… however, the restore did not work and I had to go to another PC and do the restore from a pristine copy of iTunes.
Then after restoring and reloading my music/apps, I have noticed a marked decrease in battery life. Battery life was poor to begin with and now it is just horrible. I can be fully charged before going to bed and it will be just about dead when I awake… about 7 hours with “no” activity… I just do not get it.
Very disappointing that Apple would release what seems to be a very poorly tested release.
Any tips? About the only thing I have seen above that I have not done that looks worth a try is formatting the iPhone and then reloading 2.0.2… have not done that, not sure I know how, but can probably figure it out. Willing to try anything at this point.

TRY a full restore in DFU mode. Like as you said the battery issue I noticed that it is mainly the firmware updating issue. Like an example I had one phone 1.1.4 (Ziphone unlock) and then I noticed that the battery is draining in one hour and it does not want to take charge even. So i DFU restore to 1.1.4 again, Not solved, then just restore to 2.0.1 not solved, then DFU restore to 2.0.1 and seems now stable. I was thinking to go for 2.0.2 but I will not after read all of this things.
If you have SSH / Wifi on , turn it off

Everyone who have problems should try install new update 2.0.2 without restoring old backup. 100% this is your problem, and of course Winterboard is cause for many Lag. I change docks and icons manually without using of Winterboard, and have to admit, my Iphone with 2.0.2 Quickpawned is faster and stable then ever!

I will have to disagree with this one. Sure there are some themes that may cause lag. But just having winterboard and a standard summerboard type theme will not cause *any* lag.
I also don’t believe restoring a backup causes lag. Instead, it causes permission errors that can all be fixed mostly using bossprefs.

well i’ve had many more apps than 9 Pages in total when i had 1.1.4 so it does make a point hiding apps causes it to read diffrently having the oportunity to have more apps than allowed pages, because your folders you created with your App makes it think its 1app(folder having infinate space of apps) so you can still have max 9 pages and still have Folders with more apps inside because i had it that way before in the past before 2.0
