Yes it is true, installer 4 beta is included as part of pwnage 2.0.2. However, installer may not be working very well yet. Most these issues should be fixed soon, but here are current issues you (as users) will find with working with this revision of installer. At this point (for stability), I recommend using Cydia to manage your package installs.
- The custom info pages as intended for you to see the package by the packager does not show up on the first viewing of any package. You must click the package twice to see it. This means no “more info” links otherwise.
- Updated packages only show “uninstall” when viewed in “recent packages” or “all packages”, but it shows the “update” button when viewed in the “update” category. So for your updates, you must use the “update” category, not the “recent” category like old installer.
- Packages are seen multiple times in some cases. This can be confusing. They are most likely the same package, however.
- If internal icon is not present, package task loads forever trying to fetch the icon. No timeout. You may see a spinner on a package forever due to this.
- If a package fails to install for any reason, it sits spinning forever until installer is closed. So if you get a failed package install, close installer and reopen it.
- Package page views show the data from the previous page view initially. So if you are looking at package “bossprefs” and then go to “bosstool” you will see the description for BossPrefs still until BossTool page loads. This can be confusing especially on a slow internet connection. So you should wait for the page to load patiently.
- Installed packages do not show much indication when they are done other than the red tasks thing goes away.So you hit a package to install it, and nothing appears to h appen. The package is also not moved into the installed list until you exit the category and enter it again. You can gage when the process is done based on the red “tasks” number going away.
- Community sources package is incorrect. It is missing most the main repositories and also missing all the icons in our repository causing a whole bunch of “file not found” errors to pop up when browsing packages (making installer unusable). This will be resolved soon. If not, we will put out a package called “bigboss installer icons” that will resolve it.
- Some packages will never appear in installer such as Winterboard, BSD. This may cause dependency issues when apps require this. These things must be installed from Cydia. BSD is a *must*. Many apps use it.
- Sometimes refreshing sources does not pick up new packages. You must refresh each source individually by clicking on it and its refresh icon.

can we just add those installer sources onto Cydia and avoid installer completely?

There are no sources to add. Cydia already has all the available apps.

I am very happy with Cydia, and now that RiP-Dev is behind Installer, I wont be installing it on my phone.

Question: Like the Weather.app, the icon wont change via Customize - or by manually changing the icon; the solution for Weather.app is to edit the info.plist, what is the solution for Installer.app?

Has anybody noticed that the installer icon on pwnage 2.0.2 sits a little lower on the screen than the rest of them?

Yeah, I noticed that right away after installing…The other thing that bothers me is if you hold the icon to move it, the edges of the Installer.app icon have a “tearing” effect that none of the other icons suffer from.

Like it has vertical sync issues?
The old BossPrefs icon had this issue until I sent Boss an updated icon to resolve the issue.

Hey Boss, is it possible for you to add SSH on Installer? I no longer have Cydia and it is not on Installer yet and badly need it, thanks.

I installed Cydia once, never again will, no matter what people tell me. Now I have installed only Installer 4, and waiting for updates to make it more stable.
But something I would like to know is why you said BSD won’t ever be available in Installer? Where’s the problem there, are we meant to HAVE to use Cydia+Installer forever? Makes no sense!

i compared cydia and installer…and installer kicks ass and cydia blows…the only reason i use cydia is because installer has few packages

you people complaining about cydia are ignorant children… here’s a few quotes: “installer kicks ass and cydia blows,” “cydia fuckin sukkks,” and so on. if you’re going to complain about a free program that you provide nothing more than shitty input on, i suggest you keep your mouths shut, and at the very least, if you’re going to complain, provide some valid fucking reasons as to WHY you’re complaining.
cydia is an excellent package management system because of what it is as well as what it’s based on. I’ve found it to be incredibly reliable and in reality, the only issues i HAVE found have been related to broken sources, not cydia itself.
if you have issues, its due to your own ignorance, as is proven by your comments. you only serve to insult your own intelligence, especially by coming here to bitch about it.
on that note, grow the fuck up. thanks.

The only lag it causes is when it closes and the wheel is still spinning showing that it is connected. Once that is done no lag appears. At this point Cydia is still much easier with no problems installing, or uninstalling applications. Plus no errors saying, “timed out” However, I understand that installer is still beta so I am sure they both will be fine products in the future. I am glad for both which is best for us the consumer who have ‘choice’. So use it or don’t use it really that simple.

I really don’t understand how anyone can say that Installer is better than Cydia. I never had a first gen iPhone, so I don’t know what things were like in Pre-2.0-Land, but everything I’ve seen from RIP Dev so far is greed-driven, unstable, monkey-coded crap. $45 for a MOBILE PHONE app to change your graphics? Come on. Some PC games don’t cost this much. Installer is (so far) buggy, incomplete, and clumsy. It feels like a child wrote it. Cydia is much more polished and a pleasure to use.
Granted, Installer is still “in Beta”. But honestly, if they spent more time contributing to the Jailbreak community (like Saurik) and less time working on their overpriced Kate, then maybe Installer would be up to par.
Just to clarify, I don’t mind paying developers for their work. I’d gladly pay $10 for Kate or similar programs. But all these “subscription” models with their outrageous “unlimited usage” pricing… save that stuff for professional apps like Photoshop or AutoCAD. I mean for Christ’s sake it’s just a phone!

I don’t know if installer is now working for me, or the BETA version is really bad. I have a first gen iPhone, and after i download any package, (i started with textreader), it won’t appear in the SB, maybe there is another way to use the apps you’ve downloaded, but usually it wasn’t that way!.
Please Help!

I have installed two apps (Horn, BOD) for testing with Installer 4 Beta (4.0b5-4), and then uninstalled them. The problem is the apps are still there and run.
Checking the “Installed package” category do not show either app, and Installer 4 Beta does not show them anywhere to be reinstalled.
Has anyone had any problems uninstalling apps with Installer 4 Beta ?

have the same problem, I am currently on my 3rd restore in the last day because installer is a piece of crap. The thing is useless, I don’t see how anyone can say it is better than cydia, Cydia works perfectly. I’m definitely never gonna go near installer again. restores suck.
