2.0 Camera / Photos fix (Need Feedback)

2.0 Camera / Photos fix (Need Feedback)

So does your camera/photos app just crash on 2.0? I had one of my iPhones doing this and twiddled around with some things and now it’s fixed.  However, before I call this a “real fix” I would like to get some feedback for others that have the same issue. So, if your camera or photos just crash please try these steps and let me know. They were tested on 2.0 firmware.

  1. SSH into your phone.
  2. Navigate to your photos folder: /var/mobile/Media/DCIM
  3. Here you will have a series of folders: 100APPLE, 101APPLE, 999APPLE etc.
  4. Enter the 100APPLE folder. Here you may see nothing (no photos) or you may see some jpg and thm files. The jpg files are the pictures and the thm files are the thumbnails that show up with the pictures.
  5. Look for any thm files that do not have matching jpg files and delete them.
  6. Test camera and see if it works.

I would like some feedback as to whether or not this solved the problem for anyone with the above issue. If so, I will integrate the fix into BossPrefs.

i had a similar problem when i took a picture, it took a blank, black, picture then when i went to the home screen and opened back up photos, the black picture was delete, so i started to mess around in SSH, and i decided to set my permissions of mobile, media, and DCIM to 777 and then resprung my phone, and the camera worked smoothly again.

    tell me if that helps

Okay - glad to see someone else having this problem! I had to restore a couple times to figure out how not to have this happen. Basically, when I would open my camera it would close and the same would go for the photo album.

I realized this only happened when I also backed up my photos from itunes to my fresh Iphone. If I left them off the camera would work! Not sure this is the same problem but sounds similar.

Do you know of a good guide to help me learn how to connect SSH method using Winscp?

Oh, I wish I saw this post before I restored my iPhone this morning!

If I went to Camera or Photos on my iPhone before the restore I did this morning, I’d get returned to the Springboard within 4 seconds.

I used Picasa to copy all photos from the iPhone to my laptop. The problem then happened for the 1st time after I used Picasa to delete all ~400 photos on the iPhone.

I did a post on hackintosh about the above issue and was just advised to DFU restore or SSH and “fix permissions”.

I SSH’ed, went to /var/mobile/Media/ but there was no DCIM folder there (thus no 100APPLE folders etc) so I manually created it & set permissions to 777 but it still didn’t work after respringing the iPhone so I just gave up and DFU restored & set it up as a new iPhone. It then worked fine.

BTW, I love BossPrefs & can’t wait for a Categories-style app to be released! :-)

Yeah that sure does a *FIX for the camera, also added what “Kenyth” mentioned of the 777, extra flawless now ;) hehee

now wondering… I hope u pretty soon release CATEGORIES.app in 2.0 *CYDIA* I sure need it already, I already have 9 windows full of Apps, definitely need to organize it, don’t wanna simply use *Poof(because i want to separate them differently).

    KEEP UP THE AWESOME WORK!

Once I installed video recorder, the default camera and photos Icon were disappeared, picture are available in DCIM folder, installing camera pro enables camera to take pictures, but I can only get them by SSH and can not have the normal view or slide show on the Iphone; how can I get back the Camera and Potos applications.

    Fantastic fix!

Works perfectly, and makes me bloody annoyed that apple couldn’t build their 2.0 software with assurances that this would not occur, it’s not even a complicated permissions thing (it happened for some of us before notably with mail.app).

I will be writing a tutorial on my blog (referencing yours here of course) for users in Australia such that they too can fix this blasted issue.

    Nice going :]

Does your iphone turns off while trying to connect? If yes, go to Auto-Lock in settings and click NEVER. iPhone must stay on. If iphone is on then wait, it takes awhile.
