WinterBoard! Yay Themes!

Thanks to Saurik, developer of Cydia, we now have Winterboard on 2.0 OS! This provides some of the functionality that SummerBoard provided but it looks like it will be much much more in the near future. Currently the settings dialog just allows you to select your theme, but you can expect this to be expanded in the future. (Note: the configuration GUI is not done yet).

At the release of Winterboard, many themes were also released into Cydia. All of our Summerboard themes are now available for use! Check out a couple of my favorites (from left to right, Xadacka’s Mystic Blue, iWood Realize, Chromium:

Winterboard already does more than SummerBoard. It will theme many more elements of your U/I. You can theme the battery images and other graphics. Right now it’s being worked on to theme elements inside the .artwork files. Really incredible for being less than 1 day old!

Update:A new version is released that now supports theming inside of .artwork files! This is major. It will open the door for themes to become full iPhone themes changing the color of your alerts, graphics in apps, and all sorts of amazing things!

How long did you wait? My 2.0 takes longer than 5 minutes to reboot sometimes after installing something. It’s a bug in SpringBoard (Apple’s bug). Even happens with Appstore stuff.

u have to download customize. after that you can import the smb themes and change one or more elements rather than applying the whole theme.

can someone help me id like to repwn my phone but i have itunes 7.7.1 ive been looking to see if its safe to repwn again

    BigBoss Reply:

Why would you pwn again? Did you restore your phone off of pwnage? Once pwned you only need to restore your custom firmware image not repwn. But if you restored in iTunes fresh then yes, you can repwn again.

after installing it I’ve lost all the sources in cydia!!!!

    [Reply]

    BigBoss Reply:

I feel for you, but this cannot cause that. Something else must be going on. Sources are stored in /etc/apt/sources.list.d - what do you have in there?

    [Reply]

    anto Reply:

unfortunately not sure if I can check that since I recently updated to 2.0 and I have only bossprefs installed up to now :( any idea if I can recover this without reinstalling the firmware?

    [Reply]

    BigBoss Reply:

Ok and *nothing* is in Cydia? You do not have ssh or any term? Yea this may be hard to recover without a restore. I am worried that you have some severe data corruption on your disk. As an FYI, you should always install SSH for debug / recovery in trouble times :(

    anto Reply:

if it can help everytime I try to oper Cydia I get a black screen saying “Repairing” then it says Complete and I can return to the menu, from there I got nothing in the sources though. I did few updates as well, suggested as important before installing the WinterBoard…

    Thanks anyway

You should definitely email this into Saurik.

i cant find 3proxy? Is it cause I selected the user profile for cydia, and not the hacker or developer?

Hey! Anyone knows how iphone os adds a mask for the App Store app icons? Cause I realised if I apply my theme with WinterBoard then everything works fine except that the icons for app store applications will be resized to a stock template. My theme use bigger icons than the stock.

Each time I install winterboard and run a theme it seems to brick my iphone. I tried narrowing what the cause could be and it seems that each time I run a theme it will work perfect, though within an hour my system will crash and I have to restore. I’ve done a reboot each time i installed winterboard and each time I change a theme on my iphone. I haven’t found any forums that are discussing the matter so I thought that maybe I had a hardware problem. I tried installing winterboard onto my friend’s phone and the same thing happened–a complete lock out. is there something that im doing wrong?

    [Reply]

    BigBoss Reply:

Becareful with the term “brick”. If you are able to restore your phone and it works, you did not brick your phone. Bricking your phone means it’s permanently damaged and cannot be fixed.

That being said, I know no one that is having this issue, and I know a lot of folks running winterboard. And that’s several thousand based on the number of theme downloads I have the last 24 hours. Which themes are you running?

neon standard and vending machine…they both worked perfect, until the crash. the last time i tested winterboard was today at around noon EST. what will happen exactly is that all the apps stop loading except for the phone, forcing me to reboot manually (i usually use ireboot) and thats when it freezes. i also had it freeze twice during the boot process after installing winterboard. i thought that maybe i wasnt waiting long enough for the boot, though once i waited 15 min and still nothing. i could even see the screen flash after a certain amount of time, as if the system was trying to reboot..

    zurie Reply:

I also have this problem. but the phone doesn’t “brick”

it just fails to load the springboard. it freezes at the lock screen and i get a spinning wheel of death.

I have intelliscreen installed. The inteliiscreen freezes up as winterboard tries to do something.

I have narrowed it down to winterboard. I still have SSH active so I can fix my phone.

    Check this out.

go into winterboard, edit the .plist and put in a custom font name, (something that obivously doesn’t work).

when you reboot, your phone will freeze/lock and will not boot all the way, the second you go in and change your font to a working one, ie: helvetica, the winterboard app instantly loads up and your phone works.

now this is just a way to explain that winterboard is locking the phone from booting, ie: no error detection and no automatic disable if something fails.

I don’t know exactly what the user above me issues are, but I do know that if winterboard gets mad, it does not load the phone and it hangs indefinetally.. this could be a graphic its looking for it can’t find (ie background) themes, etc etc..

Bigboss you will know way better than I do, its all speculation, but what does winterboard do in the event of a failure to find a font, or a file, or a etc. it more definetally is locking my phone up good, and if i go in SSH and fix my winterboard, etc, i can get it to play nicely.

i’ve contacted intelliscreen and explained it a bit to them and they are looking into it on their end as well to see if there is anything that might be fixable. but i will say intelliscreen has built in error detection and automatic disabling of intelliscreen. something I wish all program’s had. maybe you can check into it, and possibly see if anything i’ve said can be fixed or setup in a way that a user can’t break their phone with a improper .plist setup or bad winterboard theme.

    BigBoss Reply:

I would remove intelliscreen. Intelliscreen can and should be rewritten as a Winterboard plugin.

I can’t seem to get WinterBoard to apply a theme. I’ve downloaded several themes that show up in WinterBoard. However, when I select one and exit out of WinterBoard, I see the spinning wheel and then it returns me to a locked phone. Open up and nothin.

    Any pointers on troubleshooting this?

    TIA

    BigBoss Reply:

Are you sure you *fully* rebooted? Not just a respring but a full restart, waiting for pwnage logo etc. This is required after the initial install for themes to work.

    [Reply]

    K Reply:

Thanks for quick reply BigBoss. I’m not certain, if I completed a reboot right after the first install. I have many times since initial install.

I received an update this morning on WinterBoard, applied, and have since fully rebooted. Additionally, I have uninstalled WinterBoard, rebooted, re-installed, rebooted.

    Still no dice..

    [Reply]

    K Reply:

So yeah. I’m thinking I did not do the proper reboot on initial install and got into some kinda strange state. I have had 0 luck getting any theme to install visibly via WinterBoard.

Additionally, when removing the application and re-installing one does not get the initial prompt to reboot. Further, it appears that the pkg management system recognizes that the pkg was previously installed.

I am assuming that a reboot refers to a power off as referenced in this howto:

    http://www.hackthatphone.com/20/themes_with_winterboard.html

I suppose I’ll do a restore and pwn again..

It would be nice, if I could utilize a terminal or ssh shell to troubleshoot and resolve this, without investing all the time in restoring and repwn’ing the device.

I would love to RTFM … but documentation seems to be … hard to come by.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the work that be is done here. Please contact me, if you have any resources that I may find of interest:

    mailing list, forums, etc….

I am a System Engineer by trade and have been working on UNIX based systems (primarily Solaris) for ~ 10 years..

    Thanks,

Yeah, I like the way if you have Intelliscreen installed, the “Surprise” theme totally bricks your iPhone so you can’t use it and need to do a restore! Gee thanks!

If you’re thinking about downloading this, I’ll just tell you what it does and spare you having to restore your phone: It plays a Rick Astley song when you start up, then, at least in some cases, bricks your phone. That’s all.

“Surprise” developer: you’re a total fucking asshole. I guess some shithead was going to bring malware to the iPhone eventually. Congratulations on being that shithead. You fucking scumbag.

    [Reply]

    BigBoss Reply:

This is not malware. Please educate yourself on the subject matter before you come here making these accusations. You should know better than to run winterboard and intelliscreen together. Both use the same hooks into springboard. This is not the only theme you will have the issue with. I’m sorry your phone got screwed up, but there was no ill intent in this theme. Perhaps you should report to the intelliscreen author that it has issues with some winterboard themes. Intelliscreen should be using the plugin interface provided by winterboard rather than hooking in itself and this would be avoided.

You say above that intelliscreen ‘can and should be rewritten as a Winterboard plugin.’ Does that mean they are currently working on it,….or just that they are able and they should work on it. Because I’d love to use intelliscreen and Winterboard together.

Add me to the list of people that this fucking lame ass theme almost bricked my phone. Got the spinning wheel of death and forced me to reboot my phone and manually delete the “Suprise” folder using Ixer. I recommend Cydia remove this theme or at least flag with cautions and warnings to prevent somebody with limited technical knowledge from bricking their phone and losing everything. Running 2.0.2 firmware for your info.

Installing winterboard seems to cream springboard and render my phone into a fancy, hot, illuminated apple logo.
4 times in a row now. One thing I do notice is that I am installing WbApp at the same time. maybe that isn’t ok. time for another restore and more testing.

Hey, I’ve upgraded my 2g iphone to 2.1 using the new Windows quickpwn 2.1. I went straight to Cydia, and installed Winterboard from the featured packages. After I got the Reload Springboard tab, and hit it, it stays there with the spinning wheel. Then after about two minutes it jumps to the reboot screen with the spinning wheel of death. Any Ideas what’s going wrong?
