Winpwn 2.0 Guide

Here is a working winpwn 2.0 guide updated to include 2.0.1 firmware. Here is what you need:

1) Winpwn 2.0.0.4 or newer.
2) iTunes 7.7 or newer.
3) Boot images for 3.9 and 4.6.
4)  The proper restore file. Get your 2g restore image or 3g restore image.

Let’s get started.

Step 1: Install winpwn, iTunes, and extract your restore images and bootloaders to your desktop. Note: if you have a previous copy of winpwn installed, uninstall it before installing the new one.

Step 2:  Connect your iPhone to your PC and load up winpwn. You will see this screen:

Step 3: Winpwn will not allow you to do anything without selecting a firmware image. So, click “Browse .ipsw” button and select your firmware image from your desktop. Note: winpwn will determine if you have an iPod, an iPhone 3g, or an iPhone 2g based off the firmware image you select and downloaded. So make sure you got the correct image. 2g and 3g iPhones have different firmwares!

Step 4: Next, we need to build the iPhone software image. Click “IPSW Builder” and you will be presented with some screens. Start on the Applications tab. On this screen you must select “Install Cydia”. If you need youtube patched then select also “YouTube activation fix”. You do not need to select this if you have a contract carrier such as AT&T. As far as installer goes, feel fee to select it if you want. But do not select installer instead of Cydia. Cydia has all the apps. Installer does not and installer is still very beta as of August 9, 2008 and contains virtually no packages to install. If you select installer, also select Cydia.

Step 5: Click the custom images tab. Here you can select custom boot images if you care to. This is optional.

Step 6: Click the custom payload tab. Here you can select some payloads in .tar format. At this time there are a couple built in payloads so there is nothing to do here. If you make your own payloads for packages you can select them here. So we are skipping this screen.

Step 7: Click Advanced tab. This is a critical tab. If you have a contract carrier such as AT&T you do not need to unlock. So you must make sure everything is unchecked here. Again, if you have a contract carrier, select nothing here! If you do not have a contract carrier, you will need to use this to configure activation and unlocking. Check activate phone, Enable Baseband Update, Unlock Baseband, Autodelete Bootneuter.app. Click the two bootloader file buttons and browse for your 3.9 and 4.6 firmware we downloaded at the start of this guide. Your finished screen needs to look something like this:

Note: If you are activating here by checking the “activate iphone” you should also patch youtube on the first applications screen.

Step 8: Partition resizer. Here is the partition resizer screen. With the current version fo Winpwn, move this to 550 mb. The extra packages will fill the root partition before Cydia gets to run and move things about. Do not make it any larger though because Cydia moves your apps around properly to the larger partition so if you resize this larger here you are just losing space.

Step 9: Build the custom IPSW. Click “Build .ipsw” at the bottom of the window. Note: save your file to some place sensible so you can find it. The default location is going to be hard to find. Try your documents or your desktop. Winpwn will crank away and finally you will see the success box:

Step 10: Note: if you are currently pwned, (phone boots with custom logo still) you can skip to step 12 and restore with the image you just made. Doing this step will not hurt but is not required for you.

Back to the main screen, select iPwner. This will ask you to select your custom firmware we just built in step 8. So select that file.

You will get a success message and you are done with winpwn!

Step 11: Get your phone into DFU mode. You cannot use any tools to do this. It must be hardware DFU mode only done by pressing the buttons on your device. Use my guide here for the steps. This works on every device so keep trying if you are having problems.

Step 12: While in DFU mode, load iTunes 7.7, and restore using shift-restore. Load the custom firmware image we made. And after about 10-15 minutes you are done. If you are having problems with iTunes or getting errors consult my restore guide. Note: if your device was already pwned and you are just upgrading, you do not need DFU mode. Normal recovery mode may work fine. You should try either one and if you have problems try the other.

Troubleshooting:

If you are getting errors in iTunes less than 20 you are not in DFU mode. Refer to my DFU guide.

If you are getting 160x errors (1600, 1601, 1602, 1604) you may have used the wrong firmware image for your device.  Make sure you got the correct image for your 2g or 3g phone. They are not the same. For help on iTunes errors refer to my restore guide.

If you are using winpwn version earlier than 2.0.0.3 you may see 160x errors.

If the last tab only lets you select activate, (step 7) you probably loaded the 3g firmware image. iPhone 3g cannot be unlocked at this time. If you have 2g, you loaded the wrong firmware image to start.

If you have no signal on a contract carrier (AT&T for example), you probably activated but did not unlock (checked the activate box on step 7). If you do not have a contract carrier, you need to unlock. Redo the steps again making sure not to make this mistake.

If your mail crashes after you sync your backup, use BossPrefs, more, fix user dir permissions.

If iTunes will not stop asking you if you want to restore your backup, see this.

    To Uninstall App

    - Click “Manage”
    - Scroll the list to find app ( you’ll see apps you don’t recognize, its most likely a program for running Cydia)
    - Select the App, Click “Modify” (top left), “Remove”

This is a great guide, BigBoss! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into all of this iPhone stuff! :)

On a side note: I tried running 2.0 for awhile on my EDGE iPhone, and it was VERY buggy. The “Apps” have to be constantly reinstalled to keep them working, and WiFi connectivity is intermittent at best. Not to mention the overall sluggishness added to the UI especially when browsing contacts or type text messages. Apparently these problems exist even on the 3G phones.

I went back to 1.1.4, and I have ZERO problems. I just wanted to mention this in case people are on the fence about going through the trouble of upgrading to 2.0 firmware.

I’m waiting for Apple to release 2.1 (or whatever update to 2.0) before I upgrade again.

I’m sure most of the apps we have grown to love on the old Installer will be available on Cydia by then, too. Sometimes it just doesn’t pay to be an early adopter!

    [Reply]

    Sean Reply:

Also, after following BigBoss’ guide for downgrading to 1.1.4, of course I’m left with modem firmware 04.05.04_G. I understand the process for downgrading this as well, but haven’t found a need to do so.

I have no problems sending/receiving phone calls or SMS, and great data connectivity over the EDGE network. I am on T-Mobile US.

    hi
can you write the steps are needed using winpwn version 2.0.0.3
For jailbreak iPhone firmware version 1.1.4

Is the instructions that you wrote working the older version ?
    thx

    [Reply]

    Sean Reply:

Did you just decide to NOT read the guide at all?? the very first parts says:

Here is a working winpwn 2.0 guide. Here is what you need:

    1) Winpwn 2.0.0.3 or newer.
    2) iTunes 7.7 or newer.
    3) Boot images for 3.9 and 4.6.
    4) The proper restore file. Get your 2g restore image or 3g restore image.

Note item “1)”. It clearly states Winpwn 2.0.0.3.

So obviously this guide is for 2.0.0.3.

We have an app available through the old Installer on 1.1.4 called SummerBoard with tons of available themes.
Hopefully this type of functionality will be available through Cydia soon. I would guess there is something in the works.

Heres a personal THANKS to BigBoss who took the time to write a detailed “How-To” and I greatly appreciate your effort. Im in no way thinking about upgrading as 2.0 is still unusable in my opinion. Everything will mature as apps are ported which my understanding is they all can be as long as the authors do it (Correct me if Im wrong BigBoss). Patience is a virtue and I give it 3 weeks until all our apps are ported. However Im not even clear as to why we would even want to flash 1.1.4 to 2.0. Is there more stability or new features Im not aware of. Shed some light on it please. Great tutorial though!!!

    [Reply]

    Sean Reply:

At least you are giving them “3 weeks”.

What’s with the arbitrary deadline? What if 3 weeks comes and goes, and all of the apps are not ported to 2.0?

The 2.0 firmware has TONS of new functionality. Geotagging of photos is one of my favorites, not to mention all of the apps available through Apple’s own App Installer. There are some really cool ones, and this is definitely the future of the iPhone.

Unfortunately, like you said, things are kind of unstable right now. I’m running 1.1.4 myself, but I’m waiting for Apple to release an update before going to 2.1, or 2.0.1, or whatever.

I have the 3g with AT&T and believe I have followed this guide exactly and already on two occasions I have yet to get Cydia in my list of applications on the phone. I left everything in the advanced tab empty (because im with AT&T). I am wondering though - when the phone was restored and iTunes booted up did it recognized that I already had an iPhone attached to the program. I have chosen “restore” from original setting prior to the jailbreak - is that my problem?

first try to get the phone into dfu mode properly… plug into itunes make sure the phone is recognized and hold home and power for 10seconds, the scrren goes black but keep holding the buttons until itunes no longer recognizes it, then hold let go of the power and continue holding home until it is rerecognized by itunes… then shift restore… if you keep getting errors try using itunes 7.5.. put the phone into dfu mode and do a 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 restore, you should get a 1015 erroro or similiar and the screen turns white not black.. then shift restore again to custom 2.0 and you should be set… If that should fail redo the same procedure get the 1015 error and run ziphone do it all to unlock and jailbreak. you’ll have a working 1.1.4 then do a normal mode shift restore and you’ll get a custom 2.0…

do an itunes 7.5 restore to 1.1.4 i left a reply just above this with the steps, get your phone into a working state, then re pwn it with winpwn 2.0.0.3, windows or mac pwnage tool the phone should succesfuly pwn and you can create a custom 2.0 and restore with itunes.. I do believe that your phone doesnt even need to be pwned to do a dfu mode restore to a custom 2.0 make just try to restore in itunes directly to a custom firmware and skip the pwn for now..

I think Error 6 is covered in my guide. It can be caused by one of:

    1) You are not in DFU mode. You are in recovery mode. Read the DFU mode link in my guide. They are not the same.

    2) You used a 2g restore ipsw on a 3g phone or vise-versa

I have a serious problem with putting my device into DFU mode. I’ve attempted this an uncountable number of times, and follow the steps *EXACTLY*. Ten seconds for both buttons, then hold Home until the computer recognizes it.

Well, my problem is, if iTunes is open, my computer makes the USB In and Out sounds an additional two more times each, and my iPod’s screen goes white. Then a few moments later, it proceeds to the Apple logo and Recovery Mode screen.

It may be important to note that with iTunes NOT open, the screen stays blank while the computer recognizes it. Opening iTunes, or having it open, causes this strange phenomenon.

    [Reply]

    William Holland Reply:

try having it recognized by itunes and hold power and home, the iphone screen will go blank but keep holding the power and home for another couple seconds until itunes no longer recognizes it. then let go of just the power and hold home all the way until itunes re recognizes it.. ive done it hundreds of times without fail…

Use itunes 7.5 to do a dfu mde shift restore back to 1.1.4 when you get an error 1015 you are all set. your screen should go from all black to all white, then do another shift restore to your custom 2.0 firmware you make with your pwnage program, and it should work… ive left a little more details on comment 45 above, and bigboss’s guide is great, as well as the guide to downgrade from 2.0-1.1.4… hopefully this will lead you to victory over your evil iphone..

    Getting:
The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (6).

Any ideas? Build the custom IPSW like 4 times now and tried recovery mode a bunch of times. No go, same message every time I try to restore with the custom IPSW.

Nevermind the phone wasn’t fully in DFU mode. EVERYONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM: If while holding POWER and HOME to enter restore you see your display light up, YOU HELD POWER FOR TOO LONG! Time it, 10 seconds exactly. THE DISPLAY WILL NOT SHOW A RESTORE PICTURE. Thanks!
