Updates: Apps for 2.0 in Cydia!

Our first apps are in our Cydia repository. Remember that we have to code and port each app so that’s why they are not all there:

BossPrefs v2.0.2a (alpha). This is the first working version for 2.0 devices. There will be some issues but the major stuff should work. The airplane / phone toggles are not implemented, the add plugin GUI is not implemented, and there may be some other minor issues. I think double tap home needs some work. The bulk of it works. I put it out immediately because there was no other way to toggle SSH. Wil update it again very soon.

Poof is your app hider. This is also integrated into BossPrefs but, well, Poof was out a couple days earlier. For those that want to hide apps without BossPrefs, this is your app.

NES Emulator ported by Nervegas. This was the first app in our 2.0 Cydia repository. Enjoy your old NES games!!

The respring app is ported to 2.0. I used this during my development of poof and BossPrefs to reset the springboard. However, this functionality is now integrated into BossPrefs in the Power button so you can decide if you want it.

There are several flashlight apps in appstore right now. However they all suck because Apple would not allow the developers to make the screen brighter. I use the flashlight app, so I wrote this one. It properly brightens the screen when you load it. It also strobes when you tap it.

Gojonnyboy made a nice reboot/respring/power off app called Power Tool. It existed for 1.1.4 and now has been ported to 2.0.

Metronome has been released. It’s a full featured metronome app made with the SDK but in Cydia for free. Very nice! (Sorry, the icon seems to only be viewable on iPhone).

BossTool is not required because Cydia moves things around for you and takes care of it. Categories is coming …

i dont think cydia is doing it, unless boss prefs is calculating the space wrong it says i have 36m of 500m left, and before i upgraded to 2.0 i used to have over 100m of space left, or is that 2.0 takes more space than 1.1.4?

Are all the apps under Install in Cydia ready for 2.0? If not how do I know which ones I can install? I pwned my iphone 3g sucessfully and installed NES just wondering where the new apps populate in Cydia as I did not have the 1st gen iPhone.

I just installed bossprefs. Upon what I assume was a restart of springboard there was a crash. Or I think there was a crash. I let it sit for 5-10mins and nothing happened.

So I did a reboot. But during the boot system freezes at the apple logo.

I can get in via ssh while it was booting but after about 10mins or so the system will go into a full lock. On the 3rd time at reboot I installed top and looked at the processes. This is what the apps were running when it froze.

I shared the same payne with you.
My iPhone screwed up to: I couldn’t open any of these Apps anymore: Phone.app, Messaging.app and Safari.app after i installed BossPrefs.
So i restored it and created a new ipsw without Cydia, so i can’t do anything wrong anymore..

Keep up good work _BigBoss_, i am only one of a million and i am not angry or something like this. =)

These are separate issues but both may be related to the same cause. Are you guys updating your Cydia? The original version did not move things around and you run out of disk space almost right away. The latest version frees up disk space properly. Eugene, we probably could have fixed yours without a restore. Oh well too late now.

At the time of install bossprefs. My cydia was at the latest version.

Running out of disk space?. That’s something to watch for.

btw. the install that killed that instance of the firmware was a custom set to 800mb from the regular 500mb

One other thing. During one of my reboots I logged in via ssh and did an apt-get remove to remove bossprefs and I still froze on boot.

My Cydia whas updated properly so there wasn’t any issue with that. After i installed BossPrefs i quit Cydia, there whas the phone for maybe 1 Minute stuck, then it reacted again with the Icon on the Springboard. Phone.app and everything doesn’t wanted to launch, so i think it is more the fault of Cydia.. =/

i deleted ibricker which i used to get roms on my 1st gen iphone..now im at a loss trying to figure out how to port roms to the 3g iphone.

is the bigboss nes rom set coming anytime soon?

if not can someone give a quick refresher course for me in how to do this cause i really dont feel like putting in any effort on my own..haha least im honest

if you run the app you will see that it is looking for roms in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/NES

So I figure you need to sftp/scp the roms over

UPDATE:

As expected its a side affect of install the BossPrefs app onto my particular configuration cause me a freeze on boot.

I’ve restored. Kinda sucks as iTunes does not let me restore my backup that I made claiming that the backup is corrupted.

Anywho. BossPrefs installs fine.

Frick. I gotta layoff installing shit if I want to use my phone as a primary means of communication.

Make sure you do all your cydia updates and restarts until you get that screen where it shows “moving things around” or something like that. After that you will have ample disk space.

I must say I’ve not seen this message yet myself, after the Jaibreak I’ve always installed every important update Cydia tells you to on start, and retarted it before installing an app, I only have your new BossPrefs installed from Cydia and it says I have 58mb out of 500mb, is this about right for 2.0?

1.1.4 gave me around 140mb free out of 500mb

You are not alone, I have not seen that message either. Cydia currently says “Last Updated: Jul 23, 2008.” Should I be seeing a message that says “moving things around”? If so, where?

I am currently having the same problem, and applications will not even install at this point. I’m pretty sure it didn’t move things around, and it is updated.

Hello Bigboss!!

we seem to have a BIG problem in Italy, and I suppose also in those countries that do not offer an unlimited data plan:

Because it is not possible to completely disable access to he net (ou can disable 3G, but I understand that the iPhone still uses EDGE or GPRS), all users that go beyond the traffic limit will incur in additional charges. Vodafone in Italy only gives you 600MB traffic, TIM allows for 1GB.
moreover, inserting a Vodafone Italy SIM disables access to the menu where you can set the APN, forcing all new iPhones to navigate using a custom iPhone APN, thus preventing us to use other data plans, or to simply erase the APN to prevent the iPhone to go online.

That is why I am sill using my old EDGE iPhone with a time limited data plan and haven’t switched to the new one.

In the old Bossprefs it was possible to disable EDGE (and GPRS).

Can you tell us when and if you are going to implement something similar in the new version? it will surely make thousands of Italian users happy

I guess the obvious reason would be so that someone can’t try to connect to it. Especially if the password is still ‘alpine’.

seems to be some confusion in the comments about whether this can be used to turn off Edge. Can someone clarify?

jack bauer says it can’t, river0 says the first thing he/she did was turn off Edge!

So I’m confused…can this turn off Edge (I haven’t unlocked/upgraded from 1.1.4 because I’ve been waiting for BossPrefs to be realized with disabling Edge feature).

Hi BigBoss I’ve got problem with the BossPrefs. I’m owner of the 1st gen iPhone and I sucessfuly upgrade from 1.1.4 where I used BossPrefs (it worked fine) but now I download it and because I dont have any contract or so about the unlimited edge or something I always keep it off in Prefs. Since I download the 2.02 version I switched it off and after like 20 secs, the edge turn on again. I hope you can help me to solve this, I would be thankful if you or anyone else could contact me via email or gimme some advice right here

Since 1.1.3 when EDGE is disabled, the E still appears so you have to disregard that. The way to determine if EDGE is off is to try to use Safari on a web site. For me, when EDGE is off, the E comes back after about 20 seconds but safari complains about not being subscribed to the internet.

I just now turned off my wifi and tested out the Edge (off and on and off again), and it all worked just fine. To those who think it’s not working, maybe you didn’t wait long enough. It looks as though he’s restarting the CommCenter process after making the change, which takes a little while.

(I had created my own script to make these changes but it didn’t work as reliably and it wasn’t as easy to run as an application.)

Also, turning off ssh when you’re not using it is critical, since anyone can easily ssh into your phone as “root” using the well-known password and then do whatever they want!

all the flashlight apps suck? you didn’t look far enough — check the top ten apps, dude

the one I have (myLite) is from there, and happens to be more popular than scads of other big-name apps….if you care to take a look

of course, it’s much more than a flashlight — does strobing, displays the whole color spectrum, flashing, trippin’ — and they told me a new rock concert feature is in the next update

another thing: if you want more brightness, for any app, you just go into your settings and turn brightness way up (duh!) …just be aware you’ll use more battery

I checked that light but it does not get bright when you load it. I do not want to go into settings and increase brightness to max permanently. This depletes the battery. What I want is for the light to come on, max the brightness while it’s on, and then restore it when it is exited. The old flash light apps on 1.1.4 did that. Mine does that. None in appstore do that. Therefore they suck and are useless. Who needs a flashlight that is not as bright as it can be?

Erica Sadun’s Light does the auto-brightness increase thing just like you describe in the new version, just like the old jailbroken behavior. Free, works well, what more could you want from a flashlight app?

I talked to Erica about this today. Apple kicked her flashlight app off AppStore because it adjusted auto brightness. So there you have it. Back to “all the flashlights in AppStore suck”.

BigBoss im using the BrossPrefs app im concernd about my disk space i have 46mb of 500mb kinda cuttin it close……BossTool was Great are we not gonna a a bosstool for 2.0……im asking cause what if ppl want to add apps Manually they have to do it in the /root folder….and like you said cydia moves things around but to were i SSH to my phone But apps still show in the /root directory no wer else…….PLease Help.

what i see on root when i SSH my phone is a link to applications, which is in stash. What i understand is that Applications are already in big partition, so not to be worry about space for apps

i do have a /var/mobile. stash folder? No i dont…this is wat i have in the var/mobile folder >>> Applications, Documents, Library, Media……and thats it and the apps in the Applications folder are the appstore apps not cydia apps.

I cannot download bossprefs, i get an error message that says “POSIX: Operation timed out.” is there a way to fix this? i cannot download flashlight either–i get the same message–however, NES, poof, macman, and all those cydia updates downloaded and work fine. what’s going on here?

Great job as always, no onto my problem. I jailbroke with winpwn, installed ssh, closed down cydia. Opened again, it then updated cydia. I believe that this has cause a problem. I could not install anything with ssh installed. I removed it and was able to install a few things, bosspref, NES, but after that I reached the same error,” source error, failed in buffer. I’ve Installed BossPrefs and it works OK, especially de EDGE disable.
The only thing is that when I change this setting a photo with a print-screen from the menu is stored in the photo-album. I don”t know why or if this is a special feature but I don”t think so.

And I would like to know why the button “disable Eddge” says “n/a” but it works, Can you let me know BiggBoss?

Big Boss, you rock! I have used your flashlight forever, and when 1.2.0 came out, I figured a simple app like that could be found in the App store, even if I had to pay for it. I jailbreaked my iP¨hone V1 11.14 to V2 with pwnage 2.01 some days ago.; whitout any problem. Every things works perfectly. Even no need to follow an How-To, as the utility is very step by step scenario.

I did just install BoosTools from Cydia. I was quite surprise to see that it’s welcome screen told me that both Ringtones and Applications were already moved.
But not the Fonts. So I did it for the fonts too.
How Ringtones and Applications could have been moved ?
Also, the welcome screen indicates the “Disk space”. I presume it is the “used disk space” ? It would be better to write it clearly, don’t you think?

Anyone know what’s going on with Cydia?

I flashed the iphone firmware and jailbroke it, but whenever I try to update Cydia it downloads for a few seconds then the screen goes black with the little apple loading sign in the middle and just hangs.

I have a problem with the last critical update of cydia.After installing it,a black screen appears with the text: “Reorganizing, will automatically restart when finished” or smthng like that, and little after, it quits and the iphone goes to the wallpaper and locks itself. What can I do? I cant load Cydia anymore.

Make it Mine worked great for me. It’s actually better than before! Now it makes the change instantly without having to do a respring, pretty fancy compared to the older 1.1.4 version if you ask me!

You are out of disk space. It sounds like you have been hitting “ignore” on the essential updates. Cydia will reorganize things on one of the updates to prevent this.

I have a touch, and even with the updated version of Metronome (which now actually starts for me) I cannot get it to play using the speaker and not the headphones.

Also, the rhythms past 8th notes are not the same rhythms playing as showing. Love the app though, keep up the good work!

I would love to see a VPN toggle. Additionally a script or such to launch VPN when connection to VPN network is attempted - something as simple as a domain or host list that would be the trigger for VPN connections.

Now that we can edit sources in Cydia, why can’t we add all the old ones and ‘test’ out legacy apps like snapture? The Snapture site says it’s on Cydia, but I have yet to see it, do I need to add another source to get Snapture? I miss Snapture. . .

Because:
1) Cydia sources are not installer sources. You cannot add xml sources to Cydia. It’s like trying to play a bluray disk in an 8 track player.

2) 1.1.4 apps will not work. It has nothing to do with installer. Every app needs to be ported to work on 2.0. See this: http://sleepers.net/news/2008/07/22/where-are-my-apps/

If it was so easy, we would have added all the apps 3 weeks ago into Cydia.

I found what happened to me. Before ugrading i had poof installed, and somehow the apps were installing on “hiden mode”. What i did:
1.- install boss prefs
2.- install an app store (somehow this step made visible bossprefs on the springboard)
3.- open poof inside bossprefs and “don’t” hide the app you are looking for.
4.- after this the next apps i installed from cydia showed directly in the springboard
