Why Avoid Ziphone?

Ziphone Warning

“But Ziphone works fine for me? Why should I avoid it?”

I hear this all the time. It’s simple. Ziphone does permanent changes to your phone. Zibri is a terrible coder that stole most the exploits for ZiPhone and did not create them. Zibri admits that he cannot code. Ziphone does work most of the time. But when it does not work, you are most likely left with an unfixable brick. Other jailbreak software such as iLiberty+, Pwnage, will not leave you with a brick. Everything they do can be reverted safely. This means if they fail on you, you just restore and try again. No harm done.

With ziphone, your damage is permanent. It’s a crap shoot. It may work 9 times out of 10, but on that 10th time that it fails out, you can expect to be purchasing a new iPhone. Sounds great right? Indeed, this is so common that the term “ziphoned” actually has meaning (a bricked phone caused by ZiPhone). Check out the google search on the term and see the problems for yourself.

If you have used Ziphone and your phone is currently working, you do not need to do anything. Just don’t use it again. The next time could be fatal. You’ve been warned!

Question:

Could you please elaborate on the permanent changes caused by Ziphone?
All unlocking/jailbreaking methods modify the phone in some way, at least they patch baseband, and pwnage patches bootloader.
I know that Ziphone downgrades the 4.6 bootloader to 3.9 (which has been thought to be permanent until pwnage came out), but so does iLiberty+, iDemocracy and any other unlock method that is not based on pwnage

Answer:

First off, iLiberty+ does not downgrade your bootloader by default. It downgrades you to 3.9 fakeblank which is easily reversible and not dangerous. This is not the same thing as 3.9 used by Ziphone! Ziphone downgrades the bootloader to 3.9 automatically. If this process fails, you’re done. This process considered so risky that Apple does not do any bootloader upgrades in their firmware packages! They could have put a stop to all the unlocks when 1.1.2 came out by having the 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 firmware upgrade upgrade old bootloaders to 4.6 but they considered this too risky and did not do it! Ziphone does it anyway.

Zibri has had so many releases that fix “type-o’s”. That’s just silly. The code is so sloppy and buggy. Some versions will unlock even when you did not ask it to resulting in a downgraded bootloader just on a request to jailbreak! Neat :(

Ziphone is also very dangerous because it does all the flashing (most risky part) during the first phase of the ram disk. During this phase, allocating too much memory can result in ram disk corruption. This is very bad. You want to minimize the amount of memory used as much as possible and you only care about stability. Ziphone doesn’t worry about this. Due to the technique used to boot the ramdisk, the memory is easily corrupted if you try to allocate too much of it. The result is that you are corrupting the very data that you are flashing!

iLiberty+, iPlus both use a smaller ram disk to flash. This minimizes the amount of memory used and takes great care to prevent memory allocations from corrupting the ram disk. Then these tools come back on a second pass to install payloads. This is done after the flashing is done where there is no risk.

As a result, several ziphone users have reported problems with no edge, no wifi, no bluetooth or a combination of the 3. In many cases this is unfixable. Zibri has added a wifi “fix” to his app which works sometimes, but this programs a bogus network address that is the same on every phone.

Guys, the changes ziphone makes are permanent. If you used it and your phone is working there is no need to do anything. You’re ok. If your bootloader has been downgraded to 3.9, you are also ok (if it worked). There are a million iPhones with 3.9 factory shipped from Apple. This article is intended to expose the risk in using Ziphone but once it is done, if it worked, you’re ok.

  13. BigBoss Says:

    Hey all,

I’ll add a quick blurb to try to clarify a few points:

    1) This post was a warning. If you choose not to heed it that’s your decision. I backed up the warning with ample facts and technical details as to *why* ziphone is dangerous. It is not just out of hating Zibri. Google for the same information you can find that my facts will check out. It’s pretty tough to make up facts with such detail. I have provided enough information that anyone technical should be able to understand it. If you’re not technical, you have no basis to form an opinion one way or the other because you cannot understand the argument therefore you cannot torpedo it. “Ziphone worked for me” is not counter to my warning since I already indicated it will probably work most the time.

    2) While I dislike what Zibri did by stealing the original exploit code, that’s not the point. The reason this is brought up is that he did not have the capability to create this exploit on his own. The reason he was first was because the dev team planned to hold this exploit forever to avoid apple patching it. So all you that think he’s so smart for being first, the answer to that is that he was first because he stole other people’s work and packaged it. Not that he was smarter than everyone else. Hope that makes sense.

    3) I have used ziphone several times and it has never failed me. But this was before other, safer methods were out. I run a help channel and have had countless folks in there that were “ziphoned”. My warning is to try to pick the method of jailbreak that is least likely to permanently damage your phone.

    4) Ziphone failures can be catastrophic (no repair ever). iLiberty, iPlus, pwnage, as far as I know has never ruined a phone to the point it was not repairable. Sure, iLiberty has failed me a few times as well. Yes, I even had no wifi after once. But my phone was never damaged. I was able to restore and redo it and all was fine. Devs that have bad apps that cause a restore - big deal you just restore. This is a bit different than a “ziphoned” phone needing to be tossed in the trash.

    5) I know Zibri, talked with him many times back in the day. He had some decent ideas for the 1.1.1 jailbreak back when. He’s not an idiot. However, he *admits* he’s no coder. This is not something he will deny. He’s more a HW guy. Do you want to run system critical code written by someone that admits he cant really code?

    6) I’m not a member of the dev team. I’m an independent user when it comes to jailbreaking. I have no personal bias towards one team nor the other. I only wish for people to stop damaging their phones. I do not make $$ one way or the other or really care who uses what. I only offer this information to help. If a few of you listen and avoid ziphone then great, maybe I’ve helped save you some money. For those that choose not to listen, I hope it continues to work well for you.

    7) Finally, to those of you that don’t trust me, I say that’s good. You should always do some research not just blindly trust information you find on the internet. I believe if you research my claims you will find nothing that counters it and only find confirmation of my claims.

I going to have disagree with the bricked Iphone from Ziphone user. I used Ziphone 3.0 for 3 months now. And Have unbricked 4 iphones and 2 itouch that newbe have bricked using ZIPHONE, iDemocracy! Sadly to say there where all PC users. I have unlocked alot phones using Ziphone more than i want to publically say! I have had no problems with them or there users, Eg..Edge or WIFI, call data. I have people that i unlocked there phones and are using them in other countrys. I have talked to Piergiorgio (ZIBI) alot on line, he help me with alot of other mods to the iphone. Very easy for me, See i do speak Italian! I have to admit if Jailbreaking Iphone ZIPHONE on PC is scary i seen my share of screw up.(I Don’t see program safe on PC) Had better luck with iliberty on PC. But that my 2 cents!

    [Reply]

  16. BigBoss Says:

As I have repeatedly indicated, “it works for me” is not proof that it is safe. There are too many permanently bricked phones that cannot be fixed and Ziphone is the culprit. I have also indicated that I have used Ziphone many times and had no problems with it. But this doesn’t make it safe. It makes me lucky. I have provided technical details as to why Ziphone is unsafe. “It worked well for me” is not a technical detail. “Flashing during first pass where memory allocations can corrupt the RAM disk” is a technical detail. If anyone would like to debate this then please provide technical details as to why Ziphone is safe or why my technical details were false.

I suppose it is possible for some Ziphone errors to not be permanent bricks, but I have not seen one. If you’ve seen one then that’s fantastic. You indicate above that some Ziphone bricks were repaired. That is great. It means that at least some of them can be fixed. But there are far too many folks that have been unable to fix them even with assist by developers that know how to fix things.

Assuming that I will be getting the new 3G iPhone when it is released, and also assuming that I will be selling my current iPhone…

If I do a restore of my current iPhone using iTunes (I found a guide I’m going to use to secure wipe it first), will it be in working order and ready to sell to the buyer? Is there anything else that I need to do? Will I have issues with this, since I used ZiPhone first, then restored, then used iDemocracy (seems like you are already saying “no issues” to this question)?

Also, what if I wanted to jailbreak the iPhone prior to sending it to the buyer…could I restore, and then use iDemocracy (I’m a Mac user) to do this without any problems?

Thanks for the warning post. I appreciate you putting it together for us. I hadn’t read about the issues with ZiPhone prior to this, but I hadn’t searched for them either.

  18. dmetzcher Says:

    Sorry, one more question…

If all I did was jailbreak my iPhone, was the bootloader downgraded by ZiPhone? I am an AT&T customer, so there was no need to unlock the phone. I only wanted it jailbroken.

    Thanks again!

    [Reply]

  19. BigBoss Says:

Probably not, it probably is fine. And to add to this point, that means ziphone is perfectly safe to use on a touch, in my opinion.

    [Reply]

  20. dmetzcher Says:

And it’s OK to use iLiberty or iDemocracy to jailbreak the iPhone after a restore even if ZiPhone was used to jailbreak it the first time?

Given that you are saying that jailbreaking the iPhone does not change the bootloader, I would assume re-jailbreaking it after a restore with another tool will simply do the same thing that ZiPhone did, and it shouldn’t be an issue.

If SIM unlocking the iPhone…maybe it’s a different story? Or would that be ok as well (unlock with ZiPhone, restore, re-unlock with iLiberty or iDemocracy)? Seems that if the bootloader was downgraded by ZiPhone, that wouldn’t matter to the other two tools, right (as long as the iPhone isn’t bricked when they get to it)? They’d just do their thing everything is fine?

    [Reply]

  21. BigBoss Says:

After a restore, the jailbreak is gone. So you’re back to square one as far as jailbreak is concerned. Ziphone could even be used for jailbreak alone, if we could trust that there wasnt a bug in the command line parser that would start its unlock routine even though you didn’t request it.

As for the sim unlock it is a different story. This is where the real danger is. If the boot loader is already downgraded, and it is downgraded successfully, the danger has passed and you’re good to go.

    [Reply]

  22. dmetzcher Says:

Thanks for the info. I just installed Baseband Info and it says that I have bootloader 4.6_M3S2, so it doesn’t look like ZiPhone touched it the last time I jailbroke the iPhone. Good news. :)

    [Reply]

  23. pocketf Says:

just a quick question as i understand the touch has no bootloader correct ?

    [Reply]

  24. BigBoss Says:

It has a bootloader (this is just the code that allows the device to boot and the os to load) but it has no baseband and no baseband bootloader. It does not have the bootloader you are thinking of when talking about 3.9, 4.6 and bootloader downgrading. Ziphone or any jailbreak method is pretty safe on a touch because you can just restore it back to shape using iTunes. The danger comes in the unlock code for the iPhone.

    [Reply]

  25. pocketf Says:

phew so no harm to the touch then,,, i restored and ran iliberty as you advised thanks much !

    [Reply]

  26. jon_slider Says:

    thanks for the explanations

    lets see if I understand

there is NO permanent damage from Ziphone, when Ziphone completes successfully right?

And NO need to run iLiberty to fix it?

And, BL 3.9 downgrade by Ziphone is NOT a permanent change, and any pre week 45, pre OTB 1.1.2 phones had BL 3.9 anyway, and the BL 4.6 does nothing I should cry about not having.. on track so far?

And, ANY unlock will downgrade the BL to 3.9Fakeblank if not true 3.9 like ziphone does..

And it is a little harder to reverse BL 3.9 from Ziphone, than 3.9FakeBlank from iLiberty.

There is a risk that Ziphone may fail to complete, in a catastrophic way, due to the use of a single pass large RAM disk aproach used by Zibri.

And, Zibri pisses you off because he made public, and exploit you already had available privately. But the general public is happy with ziphone, cause it put unlocking in the hands of the masses, with a simple user interface.. something the dev team intentionally did NOT do?

And, iLiberty is a better choice than ZiPhone because it uses 2 separate small ramdisks instead, reducing the risk of catastrophic failure.. or does it eliminate the risk altogether?

And, Ziphone does something to make the wifi use the identical ID on multiple phones, and this would crash the phones if they went onto the same wifi network together? Can this be fixed by running iLiberty?

    thanks for the detailed education

fwiw, my phone came with BL 3.9 OTB FW 1.1.1, so my only concern is whether Ziphone game me a non unique wifi ID?

    how can I tell?
    Jon

  27. BigBoss Says:

Ziphone, if it works, should be ok. I wouldn’t be worried about redoing anything to a working device. Remember, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.

You have a generally good understanding of everything as stated above. I’d like to comment a bit about Zibri’s stealing the code and giving out the exploit and why this is not really good for the general public.

While on one hand, Zibri seems like a Robin Hood or something by taking this exploit and giving it out to everyone while the evil dev team just holds it. But the reason the dev team wanted to hold it is because this particular exploit was very handy in finding other exploits to keep the jailbreak methods alive. As soon as the exploit is used, Apple patches it. The dev team wanted to use this one to keep finding other methods to jailbreak. Now that Zibri has given this out, Apple will surely have it patched for 2.0. In the short term, that looks like Zibri really helped everyone out. But in the long run, probably the opposite is true.

hey….my phone is probably 1.0.2 otb……i bought it last october….
i was of the same impression and ignorance…..ive used ziphone before and it worked fine for me…..why shouldnt i use it now…
well i was on 1.1.1 for ages and all was fine….that was how i got my phone and i never messed with it so all was good…..after about 7 months the phone became super unstable (which could be because of the 46 apps i had installed) so i had to restore it and when i did i updated to 1.1.4
now, previously, i had used ziphone on a couple of my friends’ phones and it all worked fine….this was when ziphone came out with the 1.1.2 otb unlock and jailbreak solution and all were hailing ziphone…..and it worked beautifully.
so i thought to myself….it should work fine for me this time too…what with all the fixes and the new version. so i used ziphone….and lo and behold…..my wifi doesnt work….
i restored the phone….used iliberty, used pwnage, used ziphone again, used ibilerty again….(all done while restoring the phone every time)….and my wifi still does not work…..IT ISNT GREYED OUT….i can select and and turn the wifi option off and on….but when i turn it on it never finds the wifi signals…..
is there ANY way i can fix this…..????? please help me out….
im on a 3.9 bootloader, i fakeblanked it, i upgraded to 4.6, came back to 3.9….tried all of that…..
    nothing worked…..
im a bit of a noob when it comes to open ssh-ing or accessing my phone via windows….so if the solution involves that…..please be very very very EXTREMELY detailed in your solution…..treat me like a monkey i say! :)
any help would be majorly appreciated.

also….ur saying that if it works for you (ziphone), then no need to restore….after reading this post and a couple of similar ones on mmi, i cant help but feel that my phone will become unstable again….its simply a matter of time…..so by using iliberty or pwnage can i reverse whatever ziphone did?? is it wise to do so???

As I still need installer then I restored and used Ziphone for the fourth times to get it (without downgrade options). Then I installed Cydia just to reallocate the above-mentioned things. But the Cydia still a “headache” (it always say undetermined error). How can I uninstall it Mr.BigBoss?
